Hi I’m needing some advice I have a 16 month old and since we started weaning home we’ve been offering him water however even now 12 months later he just spills it out of his mouth.

we have tried every type of cup/ bottle from open to trainer cups, sippy cups and valve free straw cups.

he has no issue sucking up or getting water into his mouth however he won’t swallow he just spills it out. I’ve tried mixing juice and also putting milk in the cups but he spits that out too.

im at my wits end and don’t know what to do because I’m worried he’s going to be dehydrated the only liquid he has is his milk in his baby bottle when he sleeps

please let me know if anyone can advice I’m worried it may be a developmental issue or something

So he’s 18 months? Does eat ok avd taking part in family meals?

How is his speech? There is a really simple checker here.

Sorry he is 16 months so it’s been 10 months of us trying and he is quite a picky eater he’s always willing to try everything at first but is very sensitive to certain textures and gets put off easily if he doesn’t like it he won’t pick it up again. He has a good few meals that he will eat but we are seeing progress with him being more open to more foods.

You need to go to the doctor they will refer you to a speech and language therapist who will do an assessment (they don't only work on speech but also feeding and swallowing basically all the functions of the mouth and throat). My son has swallowing issues he was assessed at 10 months old and has had to have all his drinks thickened for his whole life. He's 8 next month and we're slowly reducing the thickener now and hoping he can get totally off it soon. In the meantime id just give your son bottles throughout the day if its the only way to get fluids into him?

I think you’re right he can swallow thick smoothie textures but anything liquidy is a no go. Thank you I’ll call my gp tomorrow! Can I ask did you go through your health visitor or straight to your doctor. And if you don’t mind sharing did your child have any other feeding aversions or issues with sensory related things to food? Xx

We were referred through paediatrician who he was already seeing for other issues. He's severely autistic and also had terrible reflux as a baby and hardly slept.. Yes he had sensory issues with food he wouldn't really eat any solid food at all as a baby and then was extremely picky and still is
