DS is a little potato 🥔 at 10 months - gross motor delay?

He has just turned ten months and I feel like he’s the only one at sensory class who’s just sitting there and isn’t exploring…

✅ He has been sitting up since six months
✅ He can roll both ways, and push up onto his arms
✅ He weight bears
✅ He can stand up and hold onto the sofa cushion without leaning in.

❌ He can’t do any transitions. Can’t sit up from lying or vice versa
❌ No interest in crawling. When he’s had enough of being on his tummy he’ll either cry or just roll out of it.
❌ No pulling up on things.

He is a big boy. Heavy, long, and with a huge, heavy head. I know this might affect things.

I just wondered if anyone else had a baby who was slow with their gross motor milestones?

Yes mine was like this and at around 1 year was finally able to do transitions (lying to sitting) and around 14 months for sitting to standing. He caught up quite quickly, never cruised around furniture but was able to take first independent steps around 15-16 months. He was also much bigger than average and generally quite lazy. Wait until 1 year if no further progress then reach out to HV

Crawling had been removed from the milestones list recently as it’s such an unreliable indicator of if they’re on track.

If you do have concerns though you could always do the 10 month Ages & Stages.

It might be a good idea to do it anyway then you can compare the results with those at his 12 month check list.

I think it’s a bit early to assume gross motor delay. If he is weight bearing and standing against furniture that’s a hopeful sign and he is probably just taking his time. You will have a chance to review his development at your 1 year health visitor appointment.

I know the feeling though of watching all the other babies off exploring as my DD does actually have a gross motor delay.

No he never did properly crawl. He did commando crawling like dragging along the floor on his belly for a couple of months but straight to walking after that, not crawling on hands and knees
