nail clipping

I used to clip Ds's fingernails and/or toenails just after he'd fallen asleep for the night. But now he rarely falls into a deep enough sleep and clipping wakes him up again (v. irritating!!!). He won't let me clip when he's awake even with a story about 'the footballer with the long toenails' which he's interested in hearing about but not having any clipping associated.
If he gets long nails, he just scratches himself and gets nasty scratches with bleed..
Anyone with advice on clipping???

Stop clipping. Start cutting. Sit him down and tell him it has to be done. Ds has always hated having his done. We are firm but totally uncompromising: " I know you don't like it darling, but it has to be done".
Sorry, I have no better advice than that !

My dd was exactly the same - screamed blue murder if the nail clippers came anywhere near her toes (OK with fingers, just didn't like the toenails cut). We invented the 'toenail fairy' who came and left a little gift somewhere in the house for her to find if she let us cut her toenails. I just find something cheap and cheerful at a car boot or charity shop, dosn't have to be expensive - as we don't cut them every week, it's very affordable!! Maybe bribary isn't for you, but it certainly works and when you are dealing with little ones who can't be reasoned with, sometimes its the only easy answer!! Good luck!!

I found clippers easier & quicker than scissors. Also when DS wan't so happy I sant him on my knee & clipped my finger nails first so he could see it was ok. Since then he has been great with it.

What about filing with an emery board?

My DD is the same, can sometimes be encouraged to watch and see what mummy is doing. Or like tonight I sat her on daddy's knee he read a story and I clipped her toe nails whilst she was occupied! I have to be quick and take advantage when I can!

How old? DD doesn't like it but she doesn't have a choice, I hold her hand firmly and clip away.
