Do you correct a child's attempted spelling?

Like

Yelloa (yellow)
dloo (blue)
grean (green)
Paret (parrot)

Etc

he does this all the time, and gets some letters muddled too. Should I be correcting this with a "well done but...." or just leave it at "Well done!"

he is 5, so in reception?
the spelling is phonetic, and he may not know the rules for making 'ue', 'ow' etc. He writes a d for a b, but that is really common.
If anything, I would concentrate on the b / d muddle (ask him to read it back), but imo (as a primary teacher), his speling things phonetically is pretty good for his age.

I would leave it, unless I was teaching him to spell or we were doing spelling as a fun thing. The examples show pretty good phonic knowledge imo.

To encourage good spelling do some spelling games at a different time.

ratbunny · 25/05/2008 14:22

agree with constance.
I think it is far more important to encourage confidence and enjoyment in writing, and then when he has that correct the spelling etc. If you overcorrect, he may lose confidence and be more reluctant to write. at the minute, if he is enjoying writing, tell him how fab he is

SmugColditz · 25/05/2008 14:24

Yes he's in the last term of reception

He didn't know the phonetic rule of OW not always being pronounced as in nOW or cOW, so he made OA as in bOAt!

My ds is almost 5 and hasn't got to writing on his own yet - he still asks me to spell the letters for him.

My instant reaction would be to not say anything because that looks like a great attempt at spelling to me!

suzywong · 25/05/2008 14:30

I do correct but commend effort and phoenetic savvy.
like ds1, 7yrs, spelled tiles "tiyals" and I said " YES, you're right you have heard correctly, however life is a bitch and the general consensus would have us spell in "tiles". That's just the way it goes, similarly you cannot hit your mate Amelia in the nose and make it bleed and get away scott free even if she did throw a train at your head first. That's just the way it is, dear dear Fragrant Boy.

SW mwahhhhhhhh hahahahaha......

so the GC is that you can correct a little bit but not go overboard?

He is a fairly unsquashable child when it comes to me.
