8 month DD not sitting unaided.

My 8 month old DD still isn’t able to sit unaided. Is this normal? A lot of the things I’ve read seem to suggest she should be doing it by now. Should I be worried?

I'm by no means a specialist, but in my experience with my own children and those around me they should be sitting by now. Why not seek a referral as it could be something as simple as low muscle tone?

That’s a bit worrying 😔
I think I will have to contact the GP in that case. Thanks for the advice.

If you have a look at this Ages & Stsges for 8 months,, particularly the Gross Motor skills section, it gives you an idea of what most babies will be doing by now.

It might be worth filling in the whole assessment and taking it to the appointment with the GP or HV with you.

Babies aren’t expected yp score perfectly throughout the whole assessment though. Most will score grey in a couple of areas. So your LO might score low in the Gross Motor Skills section but he absolutely fine in the communication section.

If you le LO score greyvin more than 2 areas or scores in the Blavk in any areas then the HCP might want to refer you to a Paediatrician or they may want to motor how your HV develops over say the next month. If they do decide on the latter I would try and insist on them making that follow up appointment with you there and then so that you don’t get forgotten.

It's totally normal they don't sit until 10-11 months after they have learned to crawl.

Huge difference between putting them to sit (some random British thing) and them actually being able to get into a sitting position themselves. Putting a baby to sit is not good despite all the British mothers here saying im talking nonsense.

Don't worry your baby is fine 😁

MargaretThursday · 01/07/2025 20:40

Are they crawling?

DD2 was crawling at 5 months, but then didn't sit until nearly a year because if I put her to sit, then she threw herself flat to crawl.

No, not yet. She gets into the position, but hasn’t tried to crawl yet.

Ah OK.
Sorry, I’m a first time Mom, so a massive fretter! People keep asking me, and when I say no, they’re a bit negative, which is where the worry started.

If she's not crawling then she's not able to sit either its just physically not possible. She sounds fine neither of mine crawled until closer to 9/10 months

You didn't know it because it isn't true.
Average age for sitting is younger than average age for crawling.

Dd1 sat on her own from 6 months, crawled at 9-10 months. Hv said she was dead on average for both.

Dd2 crawled at 5 months, sat at around 11-12 months unreliably.

Ds did both around 7 months.

Oh, that’s worried me now then.
She tries when we sit her up, bless her. She just can’t hold herself up for long at all. She just leans forwards.

I think previous posters might be confusing two different milestones: holding herself in a sitting position after being placed there usually happens around the sixth month, while moving herself into sitting position from lying down is usually more like 10 months when they can crawl.

Really don't worry.
I didn't mean to worry you.

6 months is the average, but plenty are later. As I said dd2 was close on a year before she sat even for a few seconds.
She's 21 now and other than having an annoying tendency of leaving dirty cups in her room, she's absolutely fine. You wouldn't be able to tell which of my DC sat/crawled/walked etc first.

Just keep giving your DC the opportunity to sit. I found between my knees was a good one because you're there to grab them if they fall.
And you may find that once she finds that sitting up means she can do other things then she wants to, and learns quicker. Try sitting her up and having something fun in front that she can do/see.

Unless there are other issues, then I'd say it's early days to worry.

We do sit her up supported as often as possible to try and help her, but she just hasn’t got it yet, bless her.

My little one is 8 months and the same as you describe. Some comments here aren’t accurate either - 6 months would be considered early with the average timeframe being 6-9 months.

how did babe get on in the end?

I would just put her on her stomach so she can strengthen her core. I didn't ever put either of mine into a sitting position until they could get into it themselves (definitely past 8m). Obvs would sit them in a high chair if needed!

Thank you. I wasn’t 100 percent sure on what the usual timeframes are for these things, as she’s my first. She’s almost 10 months now, and is sitting, pulling herself into a sitting position, crawling, and even trying to stand up! So I think she was just taking her time, and doing things at her own pace. Thank you for asking ☺️

She’s almost 10 months now, and she can get herself into a sitting position. She’s sitting up unaided, and she’s even started crawling. She’s a menace now she’s figured that one out! 😂

Thanks for responding ☺️
