tantrums can be so irrational

Does anyone else sometimes not know what their child is having a tantrum about?
Cos I can be stumped about what my ds (2.5) is screaming for.

Had a tantrumtastic evening tonight before finally getting him to sleep. He was really tired, hence being in bed by 6.30pm but even so - three in a row?

The first one I got - we had been shopping and he was holding the receipt. He threw it up and the wind took it away. Cue hysterical screaming and jumping into the air to try to fly (as far as I could make out) and get it back.

The next couple were just unidentifiable, one involved screaming "window" for 15 mins - er,why son? and the other was just as random.

Is it me - am I not tuning into his needs or is it normal behaviour? He's still not very verbal, though he has become much more so over the past couple of weeks, maybe frustation at me not understanding.

Got to admit, even though he is usually lovely and I am very grateful, I am finding this bit quite hard.....

inability to express can be hugely frustrating.
DS2 would tantrum ( 20 to 40 a day at this age) He has special needs but his tantrumming reduced imediately I got some help with his language.
So he may well be really frustrated.

I saw a kid tantrum because she wasn't wearing her favourite socks.

So yes, they are often irrational. I think sometimes toddlers are on the brink of one without knowing why, then they need to find something to act as a catalyst.

I can't imagine how the window could have offended.

I always blame it on tiredness/overstimulation when I can't find a reason!
