Forget Terrible Twos-What about the Traumatic Threes?

I admit, rather smugly(that'll teach me),that the terrible twos weren't that terrible at all tbh but dd woke up on her 3rd birthday 5 weeks ago and has been a nightmare ever since.
She has started shouting (frustration maybe?) and just being downright obstreperous.

Please someone tel me you have the same problem or it will get better.

Failing that-coping strategies not involving vodka would be most welcome.

whooosh, I know how you feel, really I do. Ignorance works best in my experience.
I do my very best to ignore DD whenever she gets like you have described, walk away, sing to myself, anything but give her any attention. She might kick off even more for a few seconds/minutes but then she completely difuses herself and it all blows over.

byw, whatever is the photo of on your profile page?

Whooosh · 22/05/2008 22:15

Oh God-completely forgot it was on there-'twas a picture of a sculpture I had made out fo horsehoes for my Father and his impossible wife-actually looks a lot better in real lif-honest!

whooosh, I have a matching DS and started a v simmilar thread about this today! Awful isn't it? Have no advice, but lots of lovely ladies do, it really helps to know you're not the only one with a monstrous three year old! So really sorry you're going through this, but THANK GOD you're going through this too!
Im thinking of installing some type of panic room in my house for myself for when he gets really bad.....

lilolilmanchester · 22/05/2008 22:34

misread the OP, thought it said "forget the terrible twos, what about the traumatic teens." So won't intrude, but will watch out for your posting that in 10 years time whoosh!

brimfull · 22/05/2008 22:36

yes 3 much worse than 2 ime

ds was a nightmare

he's lovely now though, you just have to grin and bear it...and drink

Whooosh · 22/05/2008 22:43

And how old is he now ggirl?...........................24?

So glad it isn't just me-why the hell don't you ever hear about "traumatic threes"?

PAnic room sound slike a great plan-will be cheaper than the amount of vodka I am downing at the end of each day.......

OP posts:
moondog · 22/05/2008 22:45

Oh I so agree.
I call them the thrashsome threes as ds is that close to a beating every day. Loud, aggressive, sulky, tempestuous, bullying...Need I go on??

Whooosh · 22/05/2008 22:49

Well my previously gorgeous (if a little wilfull at times)dd today shouted at me,thumped me and when I put her in her playroom to calm down decide to empty the contents of an extremely large beanbag all over the floor.

I swear she is a changeling and it happened the night before her third birthday.

Please tell me 4 is ok......[pleading emoticon]

grumpy, irrational, contrary, selectively deaf.......
Panic room open, with vodka and chocolate, all welcome......quick put box of icecreams in middle of lounge floor and RUN!!!!

brimfull · 22/05/2008 22:54

4 was better than 3

5 is better than 4 -he talks a little less shite now,not much but generally much easier.

LyraSilvertongue · 22/05/2008 22:54

DS2 is 3 (nearly 4) and he's been a nightmare brat from hell for a long time now (although still my darling angel underneath). Iirc with Ds1, they turn good again when they're 4 (only a month to go...)

LyraSilvertongue · 22/05/2008 22:55

DS1 is good most of the time and he's nearly 6. DS2 is awful most of the time.

Whooosh · 22/05/2008 23:11

Oh God-that's 11.5 months of vodka, chocolate and a lot of hysterics then...oh joy.
Any more good news for me?

count yourself lucky DD is a D. IIRC, DS had the traumatic threes, was a delightful 4 year old and then got a surge of testosterone and became a monster again for a while. He's now a delightful 7 year old though so all these things do pass.
Good luck and maybe change the vodka to something with less alcoholic content otherwise your liver will be buggered by the time your DD is a teenager!
