I have an 11 month old who has never really put toys/carpet fluff etc. in his mouth the way most babies do. Up til now that's actually been quite useful because I've never had to majorly stress about small objects lying around and can give him my mobile to play with without it getting wrecked by drool but...

It's now becoming a bit of a problem because it means he won't eat any finger food. He picks it up, squishes it around and then puts it down again. I'm also now panicking that there's some major brain connection missing so if anyone out there can calm my over active imagination then I'd be very grateful!

(He was born 5 weeks prem so all his development has definitely been slightly delayed but not significantly.)

Don't panic, weddingcake !!

Think maybe just a boy thing !!

My DS is 11mths and has only just (last 2 weeks) excepted finger food.

I got to the point where , when DH and I would have a meal, I would sit DS at the table in his highchair with a bowl with 'bits' in, just for him to have something to play with and low and behold he just did it one day

'Organics' do some lovely carrot crisps which are a great shape for little hands to grip.

Thankyou - that's very reassuring. Have been trying to have lots of picnics and just let him crawl around the rug finding various foodstuffs - he plays beautifully with it but it goes nowhere near his mouth. Will just persevere and wait for that lightbulb moment!

My 11 month old DD is exactly the same. I spoke with the health visitor about this and she reassured me that while it is unusual it does happen. My DD was three and a half weeks early so not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Its just a bit of a pain at feeding time, she said she should pick it up at about 18 months. In the meantime, I just keep pushing the food into her mouth!
