Ds can read a few words - is that unusual before 3.

Hi

Ds can now sight read a few words and sound out a few more which he then 'gets'. He has known the alphabet and letter sounds for a long time so it's just a natural progression I guess.

I'm genuinely curious as to whether that's unusual - he'll be 3 in just over a month's time.

No sarcastic answers please - it's a straightforward qn - I'm not trying to ascertain whether he is a genius as I know most of them even out in the long term - I am just curious as to whether that's quite unusual...

I forgot . It's a benign of course.

motherinferior · 22/05/2008 18:03

Oh, mine is often quite malignant. Especially at the books-literacy link, with its subtle implication that as my kids remained illiterate till five it must be because I don't read either.

francagoestohollywood · 22/05/2008 18:45

Well, mine will remain illiterate until the age of 6+. No wonder Italy is in such a sorry state. Ds has completely removed "literacy" from his fond memories of 1 yr of school in England

lucyellensmum · 22/05/2008 18:46

I dont know if it is unusual or not - but if i were you i would be very proud, but don't push it for Ds sake. I could read the newspaper before i started school (ok so my parents read the sun!) and i really was very advanced with my reading. But i kept my first peter and jane book for ages and pretended i couldnt read it, because i was scared of the next book being really hard and getting it wrong - i honestly dont know if my mother pushed me.

Its never really occured to me to teach DD 2.9 to read, LEM worried that she is a bad parent now (and im NOT being sarcastic either)

lucy
(not stalking you honest)
posted before but DD is at a selctive school and the first thing we were told was not to try and teach them to read. Actually they were kind of begging...
LEM good mummy ( equally unsarcastic)

lucyellensmum · 22/05/2008 18:55

thanks pag

MNersanonymous · 22/05/2008 20:27

But Pag the problem is some kids, like ds, just nag you to read words so they can learn....how would that teacher suggest one handles that?

LEM I hope they took page 3 away

"So if anyone else had a dc who started sounding out letters and sight reading words at this age, how long before they could read a very simple book e.g. one line per page.....I'm sure it varies a lot by each child but am just curious....presume it takes a lot longer to get to that stage than if they were say 4.5 when they started? "

Mine started reading at 18months old. She knew letters (self taught...lots of time standing in car parks so she could look at number plates) by 15months. One day she started asking us to write words on her magnadoodle...we did and thought nothing more of it. By 21months we made a list of words she could read (we were bored of writing words then) and it was 300+...we then knew she was reading. By 24ms she was reading level 3 Ginn books. When she was 2y6m she started reading words phonetically- she was reading purely on sight before hand. At 2yr6m she suddenly asked what 'Afghanistan' was... she had decoded it off the front of the newspaper. Now at 3y2m she can decode at a 10.6yr+ level (maxed the test) but only understands at a 7yr level.
Just follow your son's lead. Don't let people tell you that you hothouse. I guess most people don't believe that a 2yr old is motivated to learn to read...or can learn without the use of flashcards.
Just give your son an all round day, plenty of experiences, days out, painting, playdoh, lego, swimming, park, bike etc.

I did freak a lot when she first started reading and looked up things like hyperlexia...she didn't fit, but it was still a huge worry.

tigermeow · 22/05/2008 20:46

PS Forgot to add, he sounds like a very bright little boy, just follow his lead.

LEMum- You don't need to teach your child to read yet. I was going to leave it up to the school but DD had other ideas. Just read to her lots and let her love books....you are then half way there.

DS1 (now 14) could read before he was 3, and really quite confidently at 3. He was an only child, only grandson/nephew etc, so that may have been why. He just wanted to do it and I agree that it suddenly just clicks. He is still incredibly bright now.

DS2 (5) has just clicked in the past month and has gone from reading a few words to quite long books in a matter of weeks.

And DS3 (3) knows all of his letters and sounds and i don't think he will be far behind.

I read loads...too much in fact and good read well at 3, so they obviously get it from me. They are also all very good at maths (which hey get from DH)

Mine have started with word recognition and just progressed from there. They really need to know all of their phonics before reading as that helps tremendously.

I was reading my older brothers reading books before him...he must have hated me
