11 month teething badly - stressed out SAHD - wot to do??

My DS is generally a fantastic eater and not fussy at all (even eats and enjoys veg). However, about a week ago he started a bout of teething the pain of which we have not come across to compare. We give him the usual carrot batons, cucumber sticks, toast etc and his teethers. When it comes to mealtimes - he won't go into his high chair and won't eat. He just starts to wail. He gets calpol, ashton/ parsons powders, calgel etc and infacol for the wind (as he is not eating properly). He has lost an amount of weight (he feels light). To make things worse I reckon his poor eating has contributed to him getting a cold and he hasn't had one for ages.

He won't eat his usual favourites (mashed sweet potato, potatoes, chicken, broccoli and other veg).

He will eat toast, steamed carrot batons, fruit, pasta, tomatoes, cheese, and some small amount of sardine (he is having very little protein). Needless to say I am stuck for recipes for him and rapidly running out of ideas of what to cook.

Please someone help. It's very distressing when your LO consistently refuses the food you have cooked and you feel there is nothing you can do.

PS he is due for the year old injections and I am getting worried that his system won't be able to take it and he will get even more ill.

If you are really worried take him to the doctor. If not, don't stress if he has a week of eating very little. I used to worry about this but on my second child I have realised that this is what they do.

If he eats nothing but toast, steamed carrot batons, fruit, pasta, tomatoes, cheese, and some small amount of sardine for a week he really will be fine,

Teething is shite

Also, if he has a cold, cancel the injections until he's better.

Postpone the injections.

DD went through phases of not eating when she was younger and yes it is worrying but you are getting food into him.

Bumping for someone more experienced

He's not doing too badly if he's eating that. I know it seems monotonous but if he's feeling under the weather, he'll be feeling grumpy (as you know!) so will get very picky.

If you really think he's lost weight though, a chat to the GP perhaps??? Poor you, it's stressful, isn't it.

It seems quite common for LO's to get colds/cold like symptoms when they are teething so the two are probably related. And when you're feeling rough you don't really feel like eating do you? And if you do it tends to be your nice comfort food doesn't it? Therefore my suggestion would be to ride it out. Give calpol etc. Distract as much as you can.

Another suggestion is to freeze those frube things as they can be soothing on the gums and a source of protein if you're worried about that.

But really, don't worry, it will pass!

hi newdad2, I assume your ds is still having breastmilk/formula. If so, it is fine for most of his calories to come from that source until this bout passes.
