20.5 mo and STILL not walking!

The health visitors all assure me there is nothing wrong with him as he cruises and pulls himself up but he is massive now and seriously heavy to lug about!

He shows no inclination to walk. If you try and stand him up to start walking he flops down on to his bottom. He was a bottom shuffler and started crawling at 18 months and seems happy with that.

I'm giving up hope of ever seeing him upright! Anyone elses DC really slow with walking? I need some reassurance!

my ds was 14 half months but my sis didnt walk until 2

if worried take to gp and get second opinion scans on legs test muscle tone

but it would appear if your ds didnt crawl until 18 mths old he is that bit further behind in development and will probably wake up running one day

my ds stood for ages on his own but took another 4 months to get courage to walk

have you got a walker he can pull himself up on maybe he would do it independantly

my ds was very strong willed and would rather do it himself

good luck

One of my sons was 15 months before he started walking. He beat his twin brother at crawling, climbing stairs and cruising round the furniture..but couldn't do them independant steps!

I am sure he will soon enough-he is obviously happy moving around the way he is doing for now.

i am sure you have tried it-but just incase, trying putting 2 large things (settees/sofas/poufees) close together and try and encourage him to walk inbetween. 1 step first then gradually move them away-i bet when hes done it the once he won't stop!

Yup, DD walked at 21 months and knee-walked before that for months and months. She walked holding my hand for about a month before she let go. Then she ran across the room.
I like to see it as perfectionism rather than laziness!

Thank you ladies... I like your perfectionism theory HT! I think it is purely a confidence thing for him, though laziness does have something to do with it!

Dd walked late and it was because of hypotonia- but my cousin walked late and it was simply because he was fat. (he's walking now, though).

My DS is 13.5 months and a bottom shuffler. He cannot take his weight on his legs at all and if I hold him in a standing position he just collapses. I think he will probably be a very late walker but my feeling is he will get there in the end. Having said that, I am taking him to the GP next week just to check that there is nothing wrong.

I also think they have to really want to stand/walk before they put the effort in. My DS just wants to sit on the floor as he knows it's how he can get around and he is happy enough doing that.

my ds was 22 months i think - ask for a paed referral and that will probably do the trick! by the time appointment came through he was running around just fine. Ds was also bottom shuffler but early talker so concentrated on that!
