Cot to Bed - Positive Stories and Hints/Tips Please

We moved DS (2.2) into his bed last night. It went pretty well. He was a bit unsettled at bedtime (took him a couple of hours and one cuddle visit to faal asleep, but he woke up at 2am crying having gone under the cover. We were then awake for a couple of hours trying to get him back in and asleep.

Does anyone have any positive stories, or tips, as DP is panicking and talking about letting him sleep on top of covers in a Grobag, which I don't want to do?

gardenshrub that does look quite good.

DS slept right through last night with no fussing or waking up. This was in his Grobag, on top of the covers, upside down! I did put him in under the covers but I don't think he stayed there very long.

Glad it worked out OK sunshine - can i ask a related question - we will be moving DS into another bedroom shortly and were going to move him into a bed at the same time - he's 2.3, do you think its a move too far? Ie do we do the room then the bed or both together?

Enid · 21/05/2008 12:31

going well here (dd3, 2, in bed for a couple of weeks) see my thread here

Sunshinemummy · 21/05/2008 13:10

ontheup I'd probably do them both together but be prepared for some disruption. Can you get DS involved in choosing things for his bedroom?

Enid that's fab!

oh I'm a wuss I always change slowly one thing at a time, but then DS has always dealt very badly with change. On the upside he's got to sleep by about 8.30 for a couple of nights

I moved DD to a bed at 18 months old. We put the same toys/books at the bottom of the bed and used the current cot quilt on the big bed.

She didn't bat an eyelid, except she stopped crying for us to go and get her in the morning. Now we hear her play with toys / books and sing to herself, she loves her bed

mistlethrush · 21/05/2008 14:50

Its great when you hear them happy in bed isn't it?

The other evening I put ds to bed quite early as he was really tired, although still very awake when I tucked him in. About 10mins later I heard some noise from upstairs - he sometimes shouts for us if he wants a wee or something - so I went upstairs to hear 'Bananas in pyjamas are coming down the stairs ; Bananas in pyjamas are coming down the stairs (you'll have to imagine the 'tune') - pity he hasn't quite got the hang of the words yet

ontheup · 21/05/2008 20:30

lovely!!!!!! DS burubles to his toys and 'reads' his books but no clear songs as yet (unless you count a drunken sounding ei ei ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ) thanks for the advice - will get him involved in the decoration...

Why is Grobag a problem?

Dd is in a bed (at 19m0, she kept getting out of her cot), and she couldn't wait! I laid her down on her bed, and she patted the pillow and nestled in. Then when I lifted her up to put her in her bag she cried {hmm], but once back on bed, grinned and went sleep!

However I digress..she is still in grobag as she is a wandering nomad in bed and usually ends up with her head at the bottom or across the bed.

She has a duvet underneath her so it doesn't look odd when she is not on the bed, held firmly in place by 4 duvet clips...no problems yet...although she will get up and walk in her grobag sometimes ...like the time I was on the loo at 4.00am and a little ghost appeared at the door.......

FifWoo · 22/05/2008 20:58

Don't know if this is possible but dd went into a different room with a bed when she was 2 and we had absolutely no probs! She helped pick out duvet covers etc Dora natch!!

Hi,
My DS is 22 months and we put him in a bed a few weeks ago and he cries every night/gets out of bed & comes out of his room & is a general nightmare to get to sleep.

Also been up in night, coming into our room.

Do MN think we should persuvere or accept that not ready. am 6 months pregant and exhausted but think now made step ought to stick to it,

thanks

We also left dd in her grobag when she moved from cot to bed at 2.2 and has only just got a a duvet now since she is in a proper single bed aged 2.10. We used to just put a thin cellular blanket over her so she felt "tucked in".

Babyberry · 25/06/2008 13:19

I have got loads of tips from all the posting here - thanks ladies.

Just one question - what does MN stand for?

Babyberry · 25/06/2008 13:30

Ok - just worked it out. Feeling very silly now!!

hazeyjane · 25/06/2008 13:52

Ok, haven't read all the thread (am in the library, whilst dd's are asleep in pushchair), but am interested in tips, because we put dd1, 2yrs3months in a bed about a month ago, with a duvet, she was fine for a week, with dh holding her hand whilst going to sleep. Then she had chicken pox, and had to start some new asthma medication, one of the side efects of which was a possibility of nightmares. The combination of the 2 things has made bedtimes and nights (and days tbh!)pretty horrendous, she will only get into bed if dh or I lie on the bed and she lies on top of us, when she eventually falls asleep (after lots and lots of playing up)we roll her on to bed and she is fine for a while. She is then up a couple of times in the night, screaming, wandering the corridor, and usually ending up in our bed. We have stopped the medication, but she seems to be scared of lots of stuff. We tried putting her back in her grobag, but she freaked out.

I'm not sure what to do next, my HV mentioned CC, but I think this would be a crazy thing to do if she is genuinely frightened, also I'm not sure how you would do it when they can get up and about!

I will read through this thread properly later, and hopefully find a few tips, but if anyone can come up with anything else, I would be really grateful. Thanks.

LittleMyDancing · 25/06/2008 14:00

I think you're right, hazeyjane, I would be very reluctant to do CC on a child who was genuinely frightened. She sounds like she's very unsettled, and needs security and reassurance rather than ignoring.

can you sleep on a mattresss on the floor next to her for a few nights so when she wakes up you can get her back to sleep quickly? She might then get used to going back to sleep smartish and then start sleeping through again. All children wake up during the night, they have to learn to roll over and go back to sleep though.

You don't say when she had CP, was it recently? Being ill can make them usettled for quite a long time afterwards, you might need to ride it out and let her come into your bed for a few nights.

HTH!

katie3677 · 25/06/2008 14:40

Can you not tuck the duvet under the end of the mattress so that it doesn't ride up and cover him. I think that's what we did for DS1, and he took to bed within 2 days aged 2. Can't get him out of the thing now!

hazeyjane · 25/06/2008 19:12

Thanks Littlemydancing, she had cp about 3 weeks ago, so she could still be in that post illness, thing, my dh had it the week after the girls, and i think that unsettled her too (he was really poorly). It's difficult because she is very sensitive to upset, and it does seem as though there is always something to unsettle her, I guess we just have to ride on through these storms and deal with it as sensitively as possible (and not be swayed by HV and all the people that tell us we should be trying cc!).

I'll definately try the mattress on the floor thing tonight, and we are trying her grobag again, I can hear dh putting her to bed on the moniter, so i keep my fingers crossed!

LittleMyDancing · 25/06/2008 19:52

I know what you mean, just when you get over one thing then another one comes along to unsettle them! DS recently had a bad nightmare wouldn't sleep in his cot at all, had to be put to bed on our bed and then moved when he was asleep. We've only just managed to get over that one...

hope you have a good night tonight
