Dilated Kidney Pelves (think that's what it's called)

Any advice, or info at all?!

Our son, Sol, had dilated kidneys pelves / tubes (whatever they're called!) on his 20 week scan - 6mm, instead of 5mm and we were told at the time not to worry, and that it could maybe just have been that he hadn't had a wee at the time of the scan. So we knew he'd be on anti-biotics from birth, which we have kept up with.

He went for his scan last week and I got the results today. The problem hasn't gone away, and we need to keep on with the medication, we have a follow up appointment to discuss this in three weeks and we are on a waiting list for another scan now (don't even know what that scan is?!)

The doctor's secretary rang me this morning, and I was more than a little upset, so didn't ask all the questions I really should have done, and now I have three weeks until the appointment! In the meantime, I fear I may worry myself to death.

Has anyone got any experience of this condition, what are the risks, how long will I have to keep on with the medication, will the problem solve itself in time, etc etc etc.

Can you tell I'm panicking?! (wry smile). I'm trying not to, but it's very hard when someone tells you your 5 week old baby has some strange condition you've never heard of.

I'm off to google this, and see what I can find out. I put a post on about this when I was expecting so I'll try and follow up some of advice on there, although it was mainly about how daft it seemed to put a baby on anti-biotics from birth due to a 'suspected' condition - so not much info about the actual condition on there.

I just presumed it would all clear up after birth so didn't pay much attention, apart from to ensure Sol got his medication like they advised.

Bugger!

Hi have a search on mumsnet - there have been a few threads on this recently. Having a dilated renal pelvis doesn't necessarily mean there is anything wrong, but depending on the cause it could result in urine infections. My son had the same thing in one kidney, it did not go down after birth just like your baby so he was still on antibiotics for 8 weeks. He had another scan called a MCG (micturating cystogram) which might be what you're waiting for. They injected a dye to see if there was a blockage or if the urine was 'backwashing', luckily he did not have either. Slightly uncomfortable scan but he won't remember!

Do not panic , your baby is on antibiotics which will prevent the urine infections if he does have a problem. Wait and see what shows up on the next scan if anything. I think most babies do not end up having any serious problems. Let me know if I can help at all, my hospital had a kidney nurse who could discuss these issues, there may be one at yours? HVs sometimes know a bit about it too, very very common.

Phew! That is reassuring. Thanks for your advice, you have put my mind a little more at rest.

So it's not life-threatening or anything as long as there's no infections then, thank god for that. (big sigh of relief)

Cheers Midear!

This sounds like something that our son had
when I was in labour they kept insisting that he went on antibiotics as soon as he was born.

I managed to have him referred to GOSH to a specialist called Mrs Dillon (wonderful woman) and she said that of course we would not put him on antibiotics for a year but just for a week when they did some invasive tests.

nothing to bad - they had to put a die in him and scan this and another test where they put something up his penis.

eventually it was discovered that he had a horse shoe kidney - connected at the bottom.

he goes to GOSH once a year for check ups and all is great.
