Literacy issues-feeling stressed

Both my dc have literacy issues, ages 7 & 5. Both dh & I work full time so by the time dinner has been eaten and I get younger dc to bed it's gone 7. Then it's homework time , by now the dc are exhausted and not really playing ball. As they have difficulties we need to put even more effort into homework 😩 dh also has literacy issues and hasn't enough patience imo so I feel it's all down to me. How do other working parents cope? I feel that homework is something that should be done right after school not in the evening time. Any ideas on how to make it easier? They don't want to do hw with CM.

We do some first thing in the morning (whilst I do their hair, so it adds minimal time to the routine). We also often do spellings orally and on the move – walking to school, waiting for a swimming lesson to start, etc. Do you usually get books and spellings on a Monday? Perhaps you could ask about getting them on a Friday? Not that you want them doing heaps of homework at the weekend at 5 and 7, but that's when you as a family have more time to manage 10 minutes reading and a few minutes on spellings.

How are they (and you) with as-and-when reading or literacy-related games? Reading signs out and about, games of I spy, games of naming words that start or end with a particular sound? Have they tried Reading Eggs or Teach Your Monster to Read?

Thank you, these are good tips. If I can find a way of making it fun and incorporating it into our day that would be amazing!

Ooh I think ds would love the sound of the monster books, I'll have a look at them now!
