Difficulty accepting different clothes

Hi, has anyone experienced the same? I have a 2.5 year old and they’re currently struggling with a layer of their clothes being took off eg as it’s cooler in the mornings and warm in the afternoons, they’ll have a thin jumper but if you take it off once it starts warming up they become incredibly upset. They’ll also cry and try and take off a t shirt if I put it on them, I think because their arms aren’t covered but will calm if a thin jumper goes over the top. I don’t think the issue is that they’re hot/cold but rather because it is slightly different clothing now we’re heading into spring. Has anyone experience the same and got any tips? I try and keep it positive and simple language but they have a speech delay so a bit more difficult to explain/for them to understand. Thanks!

It sounds like a sensory processing issue. There isn't really much you can do other than let them wear what they're comfortable in as much as possible and comfort through the crying when they really can't wear what they want.

Long sleeves is an easy one to accommodate though. You can wear long sleeves year round, get some light cotton/linen tops if you're worried they're going to overheat. If you're in the UK it hasn't been hot enough yet to force a child into a t-shirt, just let them wear long sleeves.

I have had this (but less extreme) with lots of kids, they don't want to switch to a t-shirt/shorts and then you can't get them back in long sleeves for the winter!

Totally agree with getting them some long sleeved cotton T-shirts or tops. I’m in the UK and I also agree that it’s not been warm enough for short sleeved T-shirts yet Smile

what help are you getting for the speech delay?

Will they give yes/no answers to questions?

So say to them: "Are you hot?" (or cold etc)
If they say "yes" then ask
"Would you like me to take your jumper off?"
etc.

Or maybe get them easy clothes so they can do it themselves so then you say "Would you like me to help you take your jacket off?"

That gives them some control of the situation, which may help.

It may be they don't like the change. It could be that they're not as hot etc as you think they are, so you're changing them from being, to them, just right, to being wrong.
My dc are adults, but #1 and #3 are polar opposites in temperature. #1 will probably still have a coat with her in 25 degree heat. She's probably still got a jumper on as well.
#3 wears shorts and t-shirt in the snow. Last time he wore a coat was in 2016.

I have two like this as well. One will need warmer clothing than those around them. Almost lives on an oodie, the other will be walking around in shorts and a T-shirt and opening windows in the middle of winter.

@BunnyRuddington glad I'm not the only one.
#3 refers to #1's room as "having a microclimate all of its own" 😂

There's always one not happy with the weather.

Currently #3's window is wide open and he has a fan going.
#1 is under a duvet with her heated blanket on.

My son hates anything that rubs. Which I totally understand of course! But it means that everything has to fit perfectly, so we can't really accept hand me downs etc.
