Dummy fairy coming tonight to my 3 yr old DD

So, we have been talking for ages about the dummy fairy who will come and take the dummies so she can give them to other tiny babies who need them. She leaves a pressie in their place (princess mega blocks).

I have decided tonight is going to be the night. My DD is hopelessly addicted to them, and walks round all day with one in - she even talks with the dummy in her mouth. (Although she can function very well without it if she forgets, is at Granny's, or nursery)

Anyone had any experience of weaning someone who is so devoted to their dummies? I am dreading the tears & tantrums.

When I say we have been talking about it for ages, I mean the last 2 weeks

Good luck! We are taking the dummy off my 4yr old in the half term hols, he has it under his pillow and sooths himself to sleep - goes back under the pillow in the morning...it's going to involve a lot of tears...wish we had got rid of it earlier!

I had a dummy til the age of 4 - in fact I have vivid memories of my mum (on rare occasions) saying in frustration that she felt like telling my friends that I had a dummy still!

(I think I gave it up with "encouragement" soon after I started school, I am a June birthday so only just after 4 when I started school).

I don't remember being upset (although I was a little older than your dd is now). I do remember enjoying the dummy, and I do remember not having it but by that stage I must have been ready to give it up, and understood they were for babies/younger children. hth.

Actually I am so surprised it has gone pretty well! She really liked her pressies, and she only asked for it about 3 times the next day - I just reminded her that the dummy fairy had taken all the dummies to give to babies who need them. She had to look in the drawer, and all our other hiding places, but then seemed happy enough.

She's now pretty proud of it, and says 'I don't need a dummy now because I'm a big girl' [cue proud mummy emoticon]

Linz13 - if he only has it under is pillow and to go to sleep with, why not let him keep it?

Hi, Before my DS turned 3 i explained to him that on the night before his 3rd birthday the birthday clown would come and take his dummy in return for load sof birthday presents!! He was fine with this.

However, when the night before his birthday came i was actually dreading it cos i knew how much he loved his dummy. Anyway, he fell asleep, the dummy came out of his mouth and i took it.

The next morning, he woke up and asked for it but i explained what had happened and we went downstairs where he found all his presents waiting for him in the living room!!

He's never asked for his dummy again!!
