No idea, but DS2 can't string together 2 words yet (or rather he hasn't) at 22 months.

I suspect that would be considered "late"

Twiglett · 13/05/2008 16:53

DS was fairly early with distinct sentences of more than 3 words in grammatical context by 18 months

Twiglett · 13/05/2008 16:54

DD didn't say anything until over 2 .. I mean nothing at all not even mummy

ask me which one is brighter go on ask me

I don't think there is a definition because it all evens out in the end and early talking doesn't signify much - generally people are only concerened if a child isn't talking.

However, some children (apparently) talk before a year.

funnypeculiar · 13/05/2008 17:04

Dd & ds were both annoyingly verbose early talkers - vocab of about 8-10 words by first birthday, sentences of 3 words/vocab of over 250 words by 18 mths. Does that help?

Also both late walkers.

Evens out pretty fast, ime.

CombustibleLemon · 13/05/2008 17:04

I spoke in sentences by 12 months. Very good for freaking out old ladies apparently. I don't think it's a big deal. I'm not currently employed by NASA

brimfull · 13/05/2008 17:07

I was very early talker.
Family story is ;
I was in a pram and told my mum to mind the hole as she walked into our newly built house.

I am a farkin genius of course.

mollymawk · 13/05/2008 17:09

Yes, me too. Apparently I said "cat" at age 9 months. I am really really clever obviously.

avenanap · 13/05/2008 17:09

I was getting six word + conversations at 14 months, he was and still is very advanced though.

fiodyl · 13/05/2008 17:11

DD was saying things like 'whats that' by 12 months but I dont think she actually understod it as 2 separate words IYKWIM more like one sound for asking what something was called

lailasmum · 13/05/2008 17:31

my DD was a very early talker, she had several words clearly by 12months and quickly strung words into sentences and very clear short sentences by the age of 18months and its continued to expand, she has been very ahead with speech ever since.Quick to pick up longer words and more complicated meanings too. However she was a very late walker-frustratingly so. It seems that some kids just zoom ahead in one area but lag back in another but they do all even out by 4 or 5. The talking is handy though as an early skill.

Have other friends whose babies were early walkers and late talkers but they are slowly all evening out as they approach 4.

As I've said before, my dd was a freakishly early talker - she was a minor local celebrity - got in the local paper and everything. She was talking clearly, in sentences so that other people could understand her at 12 months. This was made even more entertaining by the fact that she was bald, competely circular and didn't walk until 18 months!

It was huge fun while it lasted. I She continued to speak well, but by about 3 everyone else had caught up with her, and she is now an averagely clever 12 year old. She does have a very clear speaking voice though.

misdee · 13/05/2008 18:08

i remember posting on here when dd3 was about 16-18months old about her lack of speech. at age 3 almost everyone comments on how well she talks.

RosaLuxembourg · 13/05/2008 18:11

Snap Seeker - my DD1 was also a very early talker who didn't walk until 18 months. I didn't even realise there was anything special about her speech I was so busy freaking out about her lack of motor ability. She didn't even crawl until about 14 months. She just sat there and spoke like Baby Buddha.
She is now 10 and her conversation consists of Dunno and Fine.

ShowOfHands · 13/05/2008 18:12

My 12mo dd made quite a comprehensive remark this morning.

"worm yum yum".

She's exceedingly talented. And gross.

orangina · 13/05/2008 18:24

My 15 month old ds can say "uh oh" as he drops food from his high chair. He is a genius.
