Hello.
I'm posting for a bit of moral support and to see if anyone has had similar with their children.
My son is 24 months old and has limited words. The words he does say are more like half words, e.g 'ba' for ball but when he says 'ba' it could also be him meaning banana, bath or bag so I don't know if it counts as more than one word?
He says 'du' for duck, 'ne' for neck, 'ma' for mouth, he says nose quite clearly and can point to at least 5 different body parts when asked.
He talks babble a lot, almost sounds like he's talking another language but he's speaking as if he's trying to communicate.
His understanding is really good and he understands almost everything you say to him. He can point to the correct pictures when asked and can answer yes or no questions.
I'm just wondering if this is still classed as normal or if I should be pushing for a speech therapy referral? The health visitor seems happy to leave him and the GP won't listen as he says it's the health visitor who deals with it.

Push for a speech and language referral ASAP, health visitors can be very wrongly watching and waiting when they forget the length of waiting lists.
I m afraid at 2 they d be looking for around 50 words, although it's a great sign that they have good understanding I wouldn't let health visitors mess you about any further. Do double check you don't live somewhere that accepts self referrals for speech therapy though.

The PP makes a really good suggestion of seeing if you can self refer for SLT. It might also be worth checking to see if you can self refer fir a hearing test too.

Has the HV seen him recently and has she booked another appointment with you to check his progress?
