Why do you want her to stop?

Children who do this, and whos parents give full answers have better cognitive and language development.

Read Tizzard and Hughes Young Children learning talking and thinking at home and school. This might help you to feel beter and less frustrated with it.

I know its annoying but when you have run out of answers have you tried asking why do you think?

KarenThirl · 12/05/2008 12:32

I used to say "What do you think?" in respons to Why, made him try to work it out for himself and gave me a break from being a walking encyclopaedia.

LynetteScavo · 12/05/2008 12:34

Why?

nervousal · 12/05/2008 12:47

I feel your frustration!!

I just hate it when I get to the point where I reply "It just IS!", and then DD will say "you always say that.." I am turning slowly into my own mother.

Respond with "Why do you think?"

Needamassage · 12/05/2008 19:52

Have the same problem. You feel like banging your head against the wall don't you?!

I usually try and give about three or four answers and then go to "Why do you think?" or "Actually, Sweetie, I don't know".

He'll then say "Can you know?"

Very frustrating and sometimes funny!

Try amazon its a very good book and well worth reading

dylanthecat · 13/05/2008 16:17

Just had another thought about the book, it might be worth trying your college libary mine has about 10 copies. I use it a lot for my course and so does one of my lecturers. I got my copy for 10 pence in a second hand book shop

3 yr old friend of my Ds is in that stage at teh mo. he tends to stop asking after I've got all scientific and used several long words in my answer.
Apparently thats the tactic his dad ( scientist) uses too. His mumis ateacher however and tries the (why do you think it does X) to which he sometimes replies "It just does"

Meandmyjoe · 13/05/2008 20:38

i think it's great that kids ask questions. How else will they learn?? I look forward to the day my ds questions things instead of crying and whinging all the time. I can't wait to have conversations with him!

colacubes · 13/05/2008 20:47

Can be a tad annoying, all the questions, but the time will come when you're the one asking the questions, especially when its something electronic that needs doing. I am always asking my ds whos 12, whats that? hows that work?, show me, its not workin can you fix it?

What goes around comes around!

rowe · 14/05/2008 18:34

MEANDMYJOE you are a geniuse .i have spent the last two weeks moaning and getting frustrsted at the fact that my darling daugher has constantly asked WHY !that i hadn't realised ,untill today that she isnt whinging she is genuanly asking WHY? This is gona sound soppy but i looked into her eyes and they where so full of wonder and curiosaty and im the one thats gona teach her all of it ! {see i said it was soppy }.thanks will look in the libary tomorrow for that book

Aww that's lovely (not soppy at all!) Glad you have found the whinging has stopped! Gives me a tiny bit of hope. I really look forward to the day when my ds can verbalise what the hell is wrong instead of crying!
