16 month old can’t stand independently should I be worried?

Hi, my little one just turned 16 months and hasn’t been late on any milestones apart from walking and standing independently.

He was crawling at 8 months, been cruising furniture since before 1 (can’t remember when but wasn’t delayed) but still at 16 months he has to hold things when standing, if he let goes he only keeps balance for a few seconds and can’t stand independently. He can walk a few steps but he just falls. Has anyone had a little one like this -that stood and walked later?

I have read many stories of late walkers but it’s more they couldn’t be bothered to walk than they couldn’t stand independently.

If he's can bear weight, which he's doing if he's cruising furniture, I don't think it's a concern until 18 months Wink

mine is 16.5 months and can't yet stand on his own- even for a few seconds nor take any steps. He will walk pushing a walker though and cruises furniture. I don't think it's a lack of physically being able to, but just not wanting to? or maybe not being able to balance? I'm not sure. My other one was late walking but was at least standing independently and taking a couple of steps by this point. The health visitor said she'll assess again at 18 months

Sounds like the HV is being proactive as the NHS guidelines are that if they're not waking by 18 months they should see the GP Wink

See mine attempts multiple times a day to walk but always falls at 3 steps. I think something is wrong with his balance. I’ve realised he can’t squat either. When he needs to pick something up he drops to the floor rather than bending down and picking it up. Apparently that’s the missing link to be able to walk.

Can you hen walk if you hold their hands or do they collapse after a couple of steps then?

Mine will squat or lower himself down but only if he's holding on to something. We've been trying all morning to get him to stand and balance and he won't even try. As soon as we let go, he drops to the floor without even a second of independent standing
