2 year old no words

Hi, my son is two next month and has no words at all, very little babbling and doesn’t appear to have any understanding of language either.

we’ve been for the hearing test but they couldn’t do the test because it relies on conditioning them for the test using toys- he’s not really into toys either!
we’ve re booked the test and will keep trying, but I’m pretty sure he can hear. I’ve managed to get him under SALT which so far has been helpful, but still no words, I understand it will take time.

He is very active and happy. He loves to run. We go to a lot of toddler groups ect. I just wondered if anyone else has been in a similar situation and how it went?

the SALT thinks he may be a gestalt learner, he does watch TV but only two programmes- anything else he doesn’t hold focus with them.

Are you in the UK @MilkAndFenty?

MilkAndFenty · 11/02/2025 22:10

Ok so I am too so probably know the system better than I would if you were living somewhere else.

What referrals has the HV made so far? Is it just hearing and SLT?

MilkAndFenty · 11/02/2025 22:50

Yes so far just those two. I asked for an early check with the HV as the two year check is not actually until 2.3, and I had concerns around the 18month mark. On that questionnaire he was scoring around 12 months for development so she didn’t seem overly concerned as he’s under two and only 6 months delayed.

My GP had the wait and see approach and it didn't do us any good at all.

I woukd fill in and score the 2 year ages and stages a d the 2 year social and emotional ages and stages and show the results to your GP. The scoring should tell you if he needs a referral to a Paediatrician. If the GP also wants to wait and see, ask them to book a follow on appointment in a months time Flowers

TinyMouseTheatre · 12/02/2025 08:09

and if you're unsure on the scoring just ask us Wink

I wouldn't say no words at 2 was in the realms of normal although I'm not trained. Getting a referral to SLT in the UK is difficult and the person doing the referral must have had significant concerns to refer.

@TinyMouseTheatre thank you, that’s really helpful advice. Sorry for the late reply, yesterday was hectic!
I agree that no words at this point feel very delayed. He doesn’t really babble much either. I’ve not experienced this before with my elder two children. My middle child has a health condition and although he had a speech delay, he definitely understood language and was trying to make sounds. He also used makaton at this age, whereas my youngest is showing very little signs of communication.
