as dd1 can't and everyone else in the playground can and she is upset about it

we practice but she can't get the coordination right

in fact she is generally a bit rubbish at riding her bike, climbing, jumping etc

but the skipping is getting to her, any tips for me to help her?

thanks!

It's easier to skip if they run along skipping rather than on the spot. Is the rope the right length? My dd took a while to get the hang of it.

Dd1 is 7 and can only do it a bit.
She tends to hold the rope above her head and fling it, ratjer than to each side.

my six year old son can't, he can't ride a bike either. i think it's because he has flat feet

ahhh, so not everyone can do it then

maybe the girls at school are unusual then

will keep practising then but she gets so cross!

They were quite big on skipping in the infants of DS's school (lots of practice and lessons) and it took him until yr 2 to get it. Mind you he is dyspraxic. However, he wasn't the only one who took that look and there were several children who hadn't got it at 5yrs. Makes me think it is a developmental thing that will come in time.

I can't remember exactly the stages of learning to skip but one way was to hold the rope in one hand and just turn it with that hand (sorry, difficult to explain). The next stage was to jump in time with turning it in one hand. Has the advantage of the rope not getting in the way of the jumping. Once the two are in time (turning and jumping) then you can try having the rope in two hands.

DS still can't ride a bike without stabilisers but isn't that interested anyway. It is a job for this summer - to get him to learn - he is nearly 8.

I remember teaching my baby brother to skip - I guess in days gone by school regarded it as some sort of development milestone (he's now 17 and probably hasn't skipped since .

I think we started with standing still, holding the rope and once it was on the ground he then jumped over it! Once he got the hang of this it was easier to "get" proper skipping. I also had to teach him to skip along (you know without a rope)and hop....don't think his delay in doing this things caused him any issues - he is now the captain of the Village 2nd Cricket Team

ds is 5
can't skip, well has never tried ,but they are doing a sponsored skip-a-thon at school today....that'll be a cheap donation then
