14 month old, no pointing.

Hi,

DD is just 14 months. I have this fixation on pointing as though it’s the gold standard of knowing that she’ll not need any support going forward and that she’ll develop typically.

It seems very illogical, but without going in to details there are reasons why i’m like this.

She looks at her index finger, as it’s in the pointing position, but doesn’t actually point with it. Could this be a pre-cursor to it?

Personality wise, she is very dead pan, looks at adults as though they’re something she has stepped in 🫣 But always smiley for children. Not massively babbly, but does babble at times throughout the day. Her personality seems a bit more reserved with strangers, but very smiley for parents, siblings and closer family members that she sees often.

She says Mama, Dada, Peppa (For Peppa pig) Hello, Tiger (Tiger who came to tea) And also “There it is” when you ask where her favourite toy is (Obviously not super clearly but that’s what she is trying to say) But my understanding was that pointing comes before speaking, and she’s not pointing yet? She makes the noise that a tiger makes when you ask her (When she can be arsed) But no other animal noises.

Her understanding seems ok. Her dad said to her this morning “Where’s the light?” And she reached out to it, and said “There it is” But i’ve not noticed her massively reaching out to much else, which I thought was the pre cursor to pointing.

She’s clapped and waved from 9/10 months. She answers to her name 70% of the time, usually won’t when engrossed in her fave TV programme.

We were at a 1st Bday this week and the 12 month old was pointing like mad so it’s sent me spiralling!

I am wondering why she is saying words without pointing? Is it almost like echolalia?

Any advice appreciated!

DS1 pointed at 12 months, DS2 pointed at 15 months. Think 18 months the "cut off"? Are they showing joint attention with looks?

Also DS2 said several words before. Don't worry!

@scousemouse92 I can’t be certain, but as an example if her favourite TV programme comes on (Miss Rachel!) She will look at me and back to Miss Rachel? So I guess so, but can’t say that this is a constant thing for everything.

She seems interested in her index finger, often has it in the “point” position and looks at it, during a nappy change etc, but won’t bloody point 🤣

That's joint attention. Does she bring you things? DS was pointing at pictures in books for about a month before started to point at things to show me. And at first was a whole hand raise, then gradually became a finger. If you're very worried always best to get the HV involved and they will re-do the ASQ with you x

@scousemouse92 Thanks so much for your replies. Yes she passed that with flying colours about 2 months ago - besides the fact she isn’t walking.

No, no bringing things at this stage.

In some ways I think she’s a little old woman! For example when we took the Christmas tree down she was looking at the empty space with shock on her face, and then looking at me - Whereas her 5 year old brother didn’t even notice we’d taken it down 🫣
