Movicol

Looking for tips to get my two year old to take movicol. She's always been great with calpol but won't have this and we need to get it in her asap as she has a fecal blockage.

We tried mixing it with water, juice, a fruit shoot, chocolate milk and making a syrup with it and putting in a syringe. None have worked so far.

Any advice?

It's not something I've had to do. I'm so sorry that you're struggling.

Hopefully someone will be along soon Flowers

Have you tried fruit puree? We mixed it into Ella’s kitchen pouches and it worked like a charm. GP said it was fine to do so

Northernmama123 · 30/01/2025 17:25

Will try the fruit pouch, thanks :)

We've just got the chocolate flavour movicol and seen to be getting that past her mixed into milk so 🤞🏻 but she will probably twig what we are doing soon enough!

Are you mixing it up with water first or putting it directly in to the juice etc? I've found it better to mix it first with the minimum recommended amount of water, wait till it's completely dissolved then add fresh fruit juice to about triple the volume of movicol. I don't think it dissolved correctly when I added it directly to juice, milk etc.

Thanks yes I worked this out yesterday. Current method of room temperature water and orange cordial is working!

How long did it take to work? She's done some softer poos since being on it but from what people are saying it should be almost runny and watery?

Mine never had them watery or runny really. Just large volumes of soft poo!

We have had some major activity in the last day or two and we now have a very happy little girl :)

Not watery, soft, squishy and lots of it 🙏🏻

How do you know when the blockage is totally gone? My 3 year old DS has had his prescription increased to 4 sachets a day as he was severely constipated. Basically poo kept leaking out either side of the blockage. We didn't even know he had a blockage until seen by the paediatrician. Anyway, he's been on it since Tuesday (was previously on 1/2 sachet every day). He's pooing a lot! Lots of soft mushy poo. His tummy today made sounds I've never heard before! Proper deep growling and then you could hear the poo being released. How do you know when the blockage is totally gone? What happens? He's still eating lots and drinking plenty. Sorry to jump in on the thread but was going to write my own and saw this one!

Hi yeah no worries. I was beside myself over it last week and my husband was talking about taking her to A & E (dramatic!)

So she was on 2 a day for about 4 days (was a nightmare getting her to take it for the first 2 days) and by day 4 we got 2 massive slightly sloppy poos. Day 5 we got 5 big soft poos so the gp has told us to give her 1 sachet every 2 days until she gets over the trauma of pooing. She still goes up on her tiptoes to withhold and gets a bit anxious but nowhere near as bad as she was last week. She's also eating and drinking normally now.

I believe the runny poos are a sign the blockage has gone but worth putting in a call with the GP if possible to check, or call the ERIC helpline, they are so helpful.

As for the noises, yep we've had those and on my goodness, the farts! They smell eye-wateringly bad 🤣 Light a candle!🕯️🕯️

I haven't given it to my baby but I took movicol as both a child and an adult and hated it both times. Remember crying when taking it as a child 🙈 my Mam used to add squash to try and help but it has an overwhelming salty flavour so I completely sympathise with your little one! Could you not ask the doctor if they could try lactilose instead? I had to take that during pregnancy and found it much nicer to stomach then movicol. Just tastes like golden syrup! Fybogel is also much nicer and more natural.

She had been on lactulose for a week prior and it wasn't shifting anything.

She's really good now, not blocked any more, eating, drinking and pooing normally and we are just giving her movicol every 2 days on the advice of the GP. As long as we dissolve it properly, she doesn't suspect a thing 😉

Aw that's brill glad she's feeling better! Yeah sometimes got to try different things to see what works! I would worry the same with my little girl but think it is a totally typically and normal thing for children to suffer from. Doctors must see it all the time x
