Hi guys shaking while writing this don’t know if im on the right thread or what im doing!? I am struggling to get any info for my 8yo daughter who is having a really difficult time with school she has a SEND plan and is currently on half days at school so picking up at 12.30 as she can’t manage the full day. She has dyslexic tendencies and also autistic tendencies and becomes frustrated during lessons and hurts herself (this a small portion of issues ) I’m working with school and doctor but she has come to me tonight upset saying she feels like she’s wasting everyone’s time because she has all these thoughts but can’t tell us what it is because it’s muddled up in her head and doesn’t know why … I’ve explained that’s perfectly fine and we all feel like this sometimes but I can’t help feeling there’s more I could be doing? Can anyone help
many thanks

If she has ASD abs Dyslexic tendencies, has she been referred for assessment and does she have an ECHP in place? You don't need a diagnosis to apply for this Flowers

MixedCouple2 · 15/01/2025 22:50

As above and she should be at a specialist school where they xan help her in her day to get the most out of it.
You are soing great from what your have written. I know parents who haven't got anything in peace at all.

SparklyJoker · 16/01/2025 18:38

No she has nothing like that as yet she only has a sen plan at the minute

Ok so what's happening at the moment? Have you asked for Assessments for Dyslexia and ASD? If you haven't already I would ask the school if they are willing to refer her to a Paediatrician. I don't know if a referral to Caudwell Children would be of any use?

And I don't really know how you go about getting an assessment for Dyslexia but it sounds as though she needs both assessing before starting High School.

If you go on over to the SN Section the lovely supportive MNers in there DHound be able to give you information on getting an ECHP too.

You might also want to apply for DLA and Carers Allowance Flowers

We knew she was struggling academically in math and English but was getting support for that within school and at home it’s probably the last year things have got worse emotionally and more frequent outburst that all seem to be at school (odd ones at home) thankyou for your help it means a lot

It can often happen, especially with girls. I can't stress enough how much you need getting the assessments sorted and an ECHP. Don't be put off. If she's struggling now you have the start of High School looming which usually coincides with puberty.

Lots of ASD girls can cope up to a point in Primary School but fall apart in High School where there are so many more demands.

One thing I'd also suggest is doing this simple progress checker to see if she needs any support with communication Flowers

This is helpful thankyou .. no she hasn’t been assessed for it is just in her send plan that she has dyslexic tendencies she has one to one time every day within school and we also help at home but she is difficult and argumentative when I try to help her with the work sent home so we spend most of the work time waiting for to calm down so she’s can do the work

Ok so have you been advised to try some techniques suggested for dealing with DC with PDA?

You could try reading The Explosive Child or have a look on the PDA Society's website for suggestions Flowers

SparklyJoker · 16/01/2025 19:06

No they usually just update me on what they are doing within school for her and tell me to keep doing what I’m doing at home for example I’ve told her to just come hold my hand when ever she feels like an issue is starting and doesn’t have to say anything till she’s ready but then I will know she’s feeling a certain way and keep noise etc to the minim as best I can this sometime works but often after she’s already been angry and upset I will definitely give this a read now thankyou so much

Sounds like you're sympathetic to her needs already and that's good but definitely read the book and look at getting those assessments.

That simple progress checker I posted DHound be helpful too. If it says that she needs some support you can book a free appointment with one of their SLTs

SparklyJoker · 16/01/2025 19:26

Also this is my biggest stress and worry atm about high school as I know these things can turn to serious self harm in teenangers and as she’s already nipping arms and slapping her head and face it’s really scaring me

OP posts:
TinyMouseTheatre · 16/01/2025 19:37

I haven't got any experience of self harm. Plenty of other shit but luckily not that one.

SparklyJoker · 16/01/2025 21:17

I know it’s not always the case but it’s a massive worry of mine atm thanks so much for your help

Thankyou I have just done this progress checker and it says she needs help in speech and language. her speech is fine she communicates well and can get her point across but may take longer to tell a story for example …. She gets distracted easily and doesn’t want to do anything she isn’t interest in so PDA is sounding familiar to a lot of what she has been showing and I never knew it existed there has been no mention of this in school either so thank you I’m so glad I posted on here

Ok so if the Speech & Language Progress checker says she needs some support with communication the usual referrals are for a hearing test, just to rule out this being a cause and to Speech & Language Therapy.

Perhaps speak to the School Nurse and ask for these two referrals and a referral for assessment for ASD, PDA and Dyslexia? If not the School Nurse then maybe the GP?

Speech & Language UK is a very well respected charity so the HCP should take the findings seriously.

If you do go for an ECHP, and I really hope that you do, you could ask for SLat to be included Flowers
