DS too attached to his toys?

My DS turns 3 next month, since he was around 18 months he has been VERY attached to some of his toys which o don't have a problem with, however they are all hard plastic toys! He loves characters from his favourite films and doesn't show much interest in teddys or blankets.

He will hold one in each hand all the time - the car, the bath, nursery, playgroups, the dinner table, and in bed. If he can't find them for a split second he instantly panics and starts screeching. I'm unsure if this is normal toddler behaviour or something else. We thought originally it was a phase he'd grow out of, but 18 months later we're not so sure it is just a phase.

In bed he wakes up constantly looking for his toy figures, we've tried putting them away and telling him he can have them in the morning but he gets so upset we end up giving them to him just so he goes to sleep.

Has anyone else experienced something similar?

Is he waking in the night crying?

If so I think you have to be firm and keep them out of bed.

Maybe use a small homemade bed for the toys to sleep in at night so he knows where they are.

He can tuck them in at night and it might help his anxiety.

Yes he wakes sometimes 3/4 times, DH and I are so knackered!

I just can't help but wander if it's normal for him to be THIS obsessed with them?

Was he introduced to a lovey to get him to go to sleep? Did you sleep "train". He may have become overly attached due to comfort needs not being met. When did he started nursery? That can be another trigger again needing a comfort object in place of a missing parent/guardian.
