DS aged 4.9 bursting into tears at slightest thing - any advice?

My DS1 is 4.9 and has recently developed what seems to be a habit of bursting into tears at what seem to be the most trivial things (eg, I tell him it's time for bed and he doesn't want to go; I say he needs to tidy up and he doesn't want to).
This is a bit annoying TBH.
Has anyone else had this? How do you deal with it without making him think it's not okay to cry at all (which obviously I don't want to do)? Any ideas as to why this might have started happening?

Is he losing out on sleep, my DC's are like this when they don't get enough sleep or there's some form of illness on the way.

My DS1 is the same at the moment (he is 4.2), have no idea why.

It could be that he has learned an effective method of diverting you away from what you want him to do? Ignore, distract unless something is wrong.

Second the tiredness thing too, did he start school in September? Both of mine were knackered in Reception year.

HTH

Well, as far as I know he isn't particularly tired - he does get grumpy in other ways if he's tired but he hasn't been doing anything other than this that would indicate tiredness. It's been about 2 or 3 weeks so I guess he isn't sickening for anything (or maybe he will get a massive cold starting tomorrow).

My dd is doing this too. i think it's learned behaviour from one of her cronies at school tbh. I ignore it or snap, depending on my own mood, and invariably get an 'I love you Mummy' after it.

Gosh I'm a slow typist!
He did start school in Sept (v. tiny, aged only 4.2) and is only just about coming to terms with it all now! Maybe it's just another symptom of that.
I shall try ignoring it and hope it goes away.
