Feeling lost with my toddler's behaviour

Does anyone have any advice please...

My son is 3.5yrs old, he has great expressive language but struggles with understanding some language. He is incredibly naughty he hits, bites, spits, throws things and generally doesn't listen, gentle parenting approach doesn't work as he lacks understanding when trying to explain anything, but shouting and getting angry doesn't work either, both me and my partner are at our wits end and don't know what to do 😭

Is he getting any support with his language @Cherrybomb1? Has he had a hearing test abs been referred to SLT?

@TinyMouseTheatre he's had hearing tests that come back normal, he was seen by SALT last week, but because he is so hyperactive, he wouldn't engage with the lady enough for her to finish her assessment so she couldn't see what level he was at so it ended up being really unhelpful 🤦🏽‍♀️ the only thing she recommended was to get a now/next board and maybe a routine board so he could see things visually but that doesn't really help us with the behaviour 😪

Has SLT discharged or made a follow up appointment?

You could try the Explosive Child to help with behaviour.

Have you seen the HV recently? If not I'd ask to see them and fill out the 3.5 year Ages & Stages and the Social & Emotional Ages & Stages. Doing both together will help to give her a clearer picture of any issues there might be.

He's not expected to score perfectly in the first test but if either have a score of grey in more than 2 areas or black in any area I'd ask for a referral to a Paediatrician. If the HV wants to adopt a "wait & see approach" then I'd try and get her to book the appointment there and then for 2 months time.

Does he have an ECHP too?

Cherrybomb1 · 24/12/2024 17:42

@TinyMouseTheatre they haven't discharged him but they haven't made another appointment either, they said that we would catch up in the new year and see if he's progressed at all. I haven't seen the health visitor for a while, but she has already referred him back to the paediatrician for other behaviours he has, we still haven't heard back about that though, I haven't heard of the ages and stages so I'll definitely contact her after Christmas and ask for that. Thank you so much. Sorry I'm not sure what an ECHP is so Im assuming I don't have that 😂
