1 year will not drink water and still wants bottles/milk

My 1 year old will not drink water from a cup at all.

So far I have tried a Sippy Cup, a Doidy Cup, Tommy Tippee first cup, a few supermarket botttles with handled on and now a TumTum cup.

I am at my wits end, I have even tried giving him dilute squash in bottle and he is not interested.

When I give him the cups he will just try and bit them or throw them on the floor.

I have tried spoon feeding him water but he turns his head away.

I am still offering him 4 bottles a day as well as feeding him 3 meals.
It's just too much, I am always feeding him.
I have offered him custard which he dissent like.

I have been advised not to give the bottles up unless he is having water due to risk of dehydration.
Any suggestions and ideas will be most appreciated welcome.

Oh I remember this so well. Mine wouldn't accept water at all. So first I'd put water in a bottle. Get him used to having water first and foremost. A free flow cup is easier to get water from though mine just used to tip it up. The best thing I ever did was get a nuby incredible gulp straw bottle. The straw is thick and the same material as a teat. At first he can just tip it up to get wAter out and then hopefully he'll learn to suck it through the straw. it was the best way to get water into mine. Good luck, I know how scary it is worrying they'll get dehydrated

4 bottles is a lot at this age OP. Not criticising but I don't think he actually needs any water because he's having all of his fluids from the milk.

I would swap out one of the bottles for a snack today.

Swap the bottle for a snack and some water. It's no big deal if he doesn't drink the water as he'll still be getting 3 bottles of milk. The snack could be something like sliced strawberries or cucumber, which are both high in water anyway, and some cubes of cheese.

Do this for a week then drop another bottle. You're aiming for 10 floz or 300 mls of milk a day between the ages of 12 and 24 months.

Once you've cut down on the bottles he will start to drink more water, I promise Wink

Like I said though if you're worried about him not having enough fluids offer him water rich foods in the transition period whilst you are decreasing his bottles so things like

soup

jelly

blancmange

melon

Broccoli

Cauliflower

Melon

Strawberries

Blueberries

Butrernut Squash

Ice Lolly

HTH Flowers

Thanks for the replies, yes I know 4 bottles is a lot. He portably has around 500ml of milk a day.

He has Greek yogurt and home made sugar free custard as well.

I will try offering strawberries and water and reduce a bottle today.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what cup would be best?
I have tried a lot and all he does is play with it or attempts to use it as a teething toy.

Thanks again xxx

It doesn't really matter which cup at this point as he's still getting plenty of fluids. Just give him a cup of winter to try and don't worry if he does t bother with it

Have you tried him with a straw yet? Some toddlers find the novelty interesting and it can get them to drink.

But like I said, really don't worry if he's not drinking water at this point as he's still getting plenty of fluids unless you're not in the UK and you're somewhere quite hot? Wink

@TinyMouseTheatre
I have just clicked on the links you kindly posted, I will defo try the soup recipe and blancmange.
The ice lolly is a great idea as well.

Yeah I did purchase some toddler straws of Amazon but he just tries to use it as a teeter lol I will keep on trying though.

We're in the UK, I guess I just worry about him becoming dehydrated.

Thanks again, your advice has been super helpful, I wish I was so knowledgeable like you Grin.
