At what age do children "get" irregular past tenses

eg,
Bought not buyed.
Swung not swinged.

Would very-nearly 7 be a bit later than most?

I dunno, but dd is six and still says "I hadded to do so and so".

My niece 6 and very bright needs correction on past tenses all the time. So wouldn't be too concerned. it is quite a difficult concept to get. Just as you learn the rules some one changes them!!

My DS is 7.5 and still needs correction on some past tense (can't think of any examples right now sorry)

I was about 14 before I understood the difference between "bought" and "brought"
