3 year old tic

Hi,

Last year exactly a year ago my son developed a blinking tic (I think this was something he got after having Covid) it lasted 3 weeks and went away. Well the last month my son has been unwell with croup and it could have actually been Covid, following that he's developed this weird thing where he blows air out of his nose to sort of clear it and he pinches his nose and blows like you would do if you had a runny nose. And in the last 3 days he's picked up this strange thing of looking down every few minutes, it's not a blink exactly, it's quite subtle, nursery haven't noticed it even though I have flagged it. But my husband and I have noticed it.

I have no other worries in any aspect of his development.

I'm just really nervous about what's happening? And if it's some sort of tic disorder?
Any advice welcome please x

I think you're right to wonder but it doesn't necessarily mean there's anything that needs support or investigation.

How old is he exactly and how does he do on this simple progress checker? Flowers

Hi thanks for the reply- I answered yes to everything on the tracker so he's fully on track with everything and has "passed" all his developmental checks. Have you had any experience in this x

DC2 has had a small tic in the past. It's much better now they're older and able to take Sertraline.

Like you, though it wasn't really noticeable to other people.

It's really good that he's passed the Speech & Language UK progress checker but I would do the next one when he's reached 3 and a half.

It's also good that he's meeting all of his milestones. I would do the 3 year Social & Emotional Ages & Stages too and see how he scores on that.

He does aound absolutely lovely Wink

Why did they take Sertraline? I went to the drs today and she said it sounds like a tic and because he had a blinking one in January she will refer to neurology which now has added to my worry x

Also he did the 3 year check and again passed on that x

They have anxiety linked to being AuDHD. There's no way that I'm suggesting that your DS is BTW Flowers

Yes I did this One too and he passed it well 👍🏻

It's not unusual for children to have tics (around 20% have them at some stage i think i read) and they often come and go and then they grow out of them. They can often be worse when they feel under stress. DS has ASD and had periods where he had tics when he was younger. As well as ASD, ADHD in particular has high comorbidity I believe. Doesn't mean he has either though.

I wouldn't worry too much about the tics and I'm surprised they referred you tbh. I'm not sure much will come of it (not that I'm an expert!) I would just do all you can to reduce his stress, lots of quiet, chilled, down time. Is he enjoying nursery?

foreverhopeful1uk · 06/12/2024 03:24

Thanks for your reply. He loves nursery and hasn't been under any stress except for being unwell. I actually think he may have had Covid. When I look on here everyone seems to lead on to say their child has been diagnosed with a tic disorder or Tourette's which really makes me panic.
If this is a fleeting thing how long does it usually last? X

So in the last day my son has now started to do a neck jerk. He does it when he's usually sitting up right watching the tv or iPad. I thought they would go just like the eye blink at the beginning of the year but instead of decreasing they are increasing. I am waiting for the neurology appointment. But form anyone's experience will this increase or should they ease off and stop? I just don't know what to do
