ADHD medication for children - experiences

My DS (5) shows traits of ADHD he has an educational learning plan at school. If you'd have asked me before having him whether I believed in such a thing as ADHD, I would have said it was a myth of the modern age...not enough exercise, too much sugar and TV etc. However being a second DC, I now see 20/20 that ADHD is a real thing. He's incredibly bright but can't apply himself. He's shown improvements this year and too young for a diagnostic pathway on the NHS.

Anyway he is cheerful all the time (pretty much) but just 'switched on' all the time...think over-excited puppy, unable to apply himself to anything that required patience or for any length of time. He stims verbally a lot of the time and generally hyper. I know I'm jumping the gun a bit without a diagnosis but I'm really thinking he will need medication if he doesn't grow and change.

However I don't want to dull his colourful personality, I just want him to be able to follow a thought process and apply himself. I don't know anything about the medications available on the NHS. I don't want to compromise his cheerful nature in anyway...but I know something needs to happen. As I say...I am inclined to be in denial about this but I'm beginning to feel like I may need to face the reality that he has ADHD, pursue a diagnosis when he reaches 6 with the intent of seeking medication with his best interests at heart. Any experience or advice welcome.
