My DS is 3.6 and has no pencil control at all, in fact he has'nt even decided which hand he is going to use !
I'm not really that worried,as he has delayed speech which has delayed development in other areas also. I do think however, that by now he should be able to hold a pencil properly ??
His speech is coming along nicely now, and I'm pretty sure the pencil control will follow.
Has anyone else experienced this, and if so is there anything I can do to encourage my ds's pencil control.
Thanks.

Lots of kids in Reception haven't acquired a consistent grip or even hand dominance yet. Do lots of fine motor work, lego , necklaces , craft, making shapes with fingers and sticks in wet sand or flour for example to get an interest in letters abd writign but really he sounds ok.

Thanks Lizs, he is still at pre-school, as he is a September baby, so will start in receprion next September.
I will give your suggestions a try.
Thanks

my DS1 is just like this too and the exact same age.

I find it really difficult to get him interested in drawing, writing, colouring etc but we are getting there. He would much rather be running around than sitting still.

Like crawling and walking, different children have different strengths.

HE IS ONLY 3 YEARS OLD. Think about it. He's been on this planet for 3 years and you are concerned as to whether he can hold a pencil!!!!

If he was 6 years old, then that would be a different matter.

I do not think a 3 year old should necessarily be holding a pencil correctly. Some do, some don't.

You are correct not to worry. Enjoy his company instead.
