If a health visitor says your child is fine, but a doctor says something really wrong..
Whose right? Or could there be a middle ground?

Sorry I know it's vague but having two professionals I trust being so point blank intensely opposite has thrown me and I don't know what to think :(

I don't understand how they could be on such different pages. So now I'm thinking I didn't express myself and the doctor misinterpreted..but he saw my child in person so he couldn't be drastically wrong right? But then again the health visitor see them too :( can you give me perspective or experiences in your life when professionals tell you different things. I felt told off 😅

If your HV is anything like the ones I had they wouldn't be able to spot a problem if it was completely obvious.

Can you tell us how your LO was referred to a Paediatrician and what for?

scousemouse92 · 08/09/2024 21:58

What's the context?

Definitely this 😂 can you say what it is they disagree on?

That there is a genetic disability. She says fine and I felt making out I am dramatic and making it up. She seemed quite snappy that she saw a paediatric, I'm not sure why. It was a routine follow up as she couldn't feed when born.

Doctor thinks delay, development problem and growth and something about her facial features making him think so.

So complete extreme opposites. The doctor misheard one point. I said not walking independently but he heard not walking. So now I'm worried he went on wrong info. But he did watch her, and do measurements.

I don't know I'm feeling I'm going crazy. Since birth everything has been like pulling teeth. But the health visitor dismisses it all and I get confused and think I'm a wet blanket 😅

Health visitors can be absolutely useless.

Exactly the same here, then through school. Was told I was imagining things, it was my parenting, all of the usual stuff they come out with.

I'd go with what your Paediatrician says. If they do the Genetic Testing and everything is fine then at least you'll know one way or the other. My eldest has recently seen a Genetics Consultant. It's been a long road for us, it's really good that you had this follow up appointment and the Paediatrician wants to do some investigations Flowers

scousemouse92 · 09/09/2024 08:45

For something like that, I'd go paediatric over HV every time. I tend to think HV are better with stuff like colic, reflux etc and more supportive then

skkyelark · 09/09/2024 16:39

I rate our local health visitors, but for something like this, absolutely the paediatrician is the expert.

Scirocco · 12/09/2024 07:46

The paediatrician is the medical expert. It sounds like they think some investigations/assessments could be useful, so I'd work with them to get started on those.
