2 year old fighting naps out of nowhere

So im pretty sure this is just one of those horrible phases that they go through, but I'm looking to see if anyones been in a similar situation. My son turns 2 next weekend, and for the past week or so has been an absolute nightmare when it comes to sleep. At bedtime he goes down like an angel but wakes quite a bit through the night, meaning hes only getting about 9 hours sleep, and then when i try to put him down for his usual nap at 12pm, he screams and screams for a good while, falls asleep for maybe 45 minutes and then wakes up screaming bloody murder again!

I'm pretty sure his last molars are coming through, so they could be the main culprit of this. Along with the sleeping issues I've also had a lot of problems with him screaming and screeching during the day when hes frustrated, he doesnt have the best speech so its understandable, but someone please tell me that this behaviour is normal and is just a phase! He loved his 2 hour naps and i dont think for a second that hes ready to cut them.

Maybe try putting him down later or letting him fall asleep on the sofa/in the he buggy.

NHS says 2 website olds need at least an hour of nap, perhaps he is now down towards the lower end of sleep needs and an hour would suffice, perhaps try to push the nap a bit later and cut it to an hour? That being said, i gather 2 website oles often have a phase of fighting naps so it may pass. Our 20 month old only naps for 1.5 hours and I expect we will have to cut it to an hour when she is 2 or so. She used to be at the top of the sleep needs averages but not anymore unfortunately. . . .

If his molars are coming through, have you tried anbesol on his gums before nap time? Teething was more a night time sleep problem for us, but I've had inconsolable, crying children be asleep practically before I'd put the bottle away.
