Baby MRI scan

Hi,

My 9 month old is due a brain/spine MRI scan soon and I’m very nervous about it. Mainly scared about him having general anaesthetic (it goes against your instinct to have your baby under general anaesthetic; what if he has a reaction to it).

Also nervous about being away from him during the 60 minute procedure. Also worried his hearing could be affected as MRIs are loud. And also scared his behaviour might be affected…I know he won’t be awake during it but maybe his subconscious brain will pick up what’s going on and develop negative behaviours after going through something quite traumatic?

Sorry if this all sounds ridiculous. I wish we could just have the result without having to have the scan!

Would love to hear from anyone who has been through this?

I've not been through it and I can imagine how worried you are. Can you ask the team if they use ear defenders or ear plugs when they're in there?

I wouldn't worry about the ears. They use ear protection. My daughter had one at 6 months of age and she is now 4 and absolutely fine. She had glue ear and bad hearing from that but in no way related to the MRi scan.
I do not think that your child will experience trauma when under GA. My daughter didn't even have one. We just kept her awake all day and she was asleep during the MRI scan. So despite not having a GA her subconscious did not pick up on anything.
It is OK to be scared and anxious, you're his mom after all but trust the medical professionals . They will keep him safe.

My baby has had two MRI scans - one when around a week old and one around 6months olds. He has never needed GA. I can’t remember any ear protection but he is over a year now and has very good hearing.

I thought getting him to lie still was the most difficult aspect however he in a sort of padded holder with straps and I was able to sit next to him. I actually sang to him and he fell asleep and slept for the majority of it. I think the staff said that was not unusual. The staff kept me right throughout and it was worth all the stress to get the results.
