14month old tantrums - what to do??

My DS is 14 months and up to now has been a very laid back, happy baby (I know I have been very lucky!!). She has just learnt to walk and starting to talk (constantly gabbling to herself with a few recognisable attempts at words) but she has just started to have the most horrible tantrums over the slightest thing. Any advice on how to handle these? Tried ignoring but I do find I get upset as she seems so distraught (maybe I need to toughen up as I haven't really had to before as she's never really been much of a crier - nothing that a quick cuddle wouldn't sort out!). Shes been at nursery around 3 months and they say she's great there.
Probably just normal toddler stuff but it seems such a big change in behaviour. I'd be grateful for any suggestions on how to handle it? thanks

Mine is a similar age and having tantrums too. He screams really loundly. I mean REALLY loudly, and flings himself on the floor. I just try to keep calm myself and explain in a nice voice why he can't have the mobile phone/pair of scissors/other child's toy and wait till it passes.

Everyone I know with children has had this, but it is a real shock when it happens to your sweet biddable baby.

what starlight said! Try and distract, otherwise leave them (safely!) and then cuddle after a minute or so.
