Ds nearly 4 months learnt to roll from back to front tonight - very proud mummy!!!
But he cant seem to roll back. i put him down to bed @8.30 and he normally has a half hour kick and wriggle before dropping off. He rolled over twice during this time.
Now asleep so am now camped out in his room as darnt leave him - what do i do!!

he may prefer to sleep on his front

you can get some typr of pillow which is like two tubes on either side so the baby cannot roll.

is it safe @ that age for him to sleep on front?
Thanx for quick responce just looking up those nests. any quick solutions about tonight?

can he support his own head? rolling at 4 months is early as most do not until about 7-8 months i think, correct me if i am wrong. my ds prefers sleeping on his front too. but the towels is a good idea as mentioned below.

fullamilk · 16/04/2008 21:32

He normally still wake for feeds once or twice in the night. not rolled over since been asleep. where would i put the towels? under the sheet?

i guess you could though some people would just put it on either side of baby on top as once under the sheets it sould be hard to adjsut around baby.

fullamilk · 16/04/2008 21:35

He has quite good neck control think he would maybe be able to roll back if i left him long enough. though was a bit early to

babies develope at different rates. do what you feel is best and what you feel comfortable with, if you are worried as i can understand why since he is still very young try the towels as that may ease your mind.

My dd did exactly that. She used to roll over, i think at about 4 months (i was a proud mummy too) and she couldn't roll back either. In fact she didn't roll back for a really long time. When she used to do it in her cot at night, i didn't worry to much because she could lift her head. I think it's only dangerous with babies that cannot lift their heads up.

My DS started rolling over at three months and it didn't matter how many times I rolled back on to his back he immediately flipped himself over again! Spent the first few nights with him but realised that he prefered to sleep on his front so left him to it.

Thanks for all the messages think i need to chill out but pfb and all that. When on his belly he can hold his head up well clear of floor if he want to. have rolled up some towels to put mind at ease for tonight.
Thanks again!

Not sure if you already are - but if you put him in a Gro-bag it is also hard to roll.

fullamilk · 16/04/2008 22:06

Already in a grow bag - hes obviously just a determined little bugger!

Ha ! In that case either ; smaller crib (can't roll, but a bit harsh...) or rolled up towels but make sure they are secure. I bought the pad thing will the side bits someone mentioned earlier (they stick on with velcro) - they are very effective, but after a while you do feel that they should be free to move a bit more. But ok for the panicky bit when they are moving but not yet very adept at head holding etc

Just consulted my own diary for my pfb - he first rolled from back to front at 4 months and a week later could roll both ways.

But most babies do seem to prefer sleeping on their fronts (not that I would put a newborn down on their front, of course). Ds is 2 now and has only just started occasionally sleeping on his back again.
