Toddler refusing to poo on the potty!

Not sure if I’ve put this under the right topic but I guess it’s developmental
so potty trained my dd a few months ago just after she turned 3. She cracked it pretty quickly with both wee and poo. Now for some reason she’s totally regressed with poo. Absolutely will not poo on the potty and is pooing her knickers every time. This has gone on for a few weeks. I can’t fathom why! I can tell when she needs to poo and if I see her trying to push, I’ve popped her on the potty but she absolutely stops and no poo comes. She may then hold it til the next day sometimes, and inevitably poos her knickers. I’m at my wits end, please help! Has anyone had the same, what did you do

No help but I am in the same boat with my son he has been training for about 6 weeks and will not poo in the potty or toilet! He doesn’t wear a nappy all day and night now as he’s dry but we are thinking of putting a nappy on him in the early evening afternoon to just get him into the routine again of not being afraid!

Did this issue get resolved? Going through exactly the same with my son and am searching MN for advice!

@StellaShining yes it has! I am Ljordaz not sure what’s happened to my account. It now seems like a distant memory and it was only in August I posted this which I hope will provide you some reassurance!

It took 6 weeks for us to work through this. We think the root cause was us starting potty training too early back in February and then stopping and starting again in July then it created a fear so he ‘held it in’ which then made his poo hard and painful.

I spoke to Eric the charity and they were really helpful with tips which included using positive language around poo and inspecting it with a lolly stick and saying look how soft it is (not for the faint hearted!).

They also recommended putting my son on Movicol which was the turning point for us as it makes the poo soft so it wasn’t feeding into the cycle of it being something to be scared of. We did a disimpaction regime so we knew there wasn’t any poo stuck from where he had been holding it in so we knew the slate was clean type thing. This was where it got better as he accidentally did a poo on the potty whilst doing a wee and it made him realise it was ok. Following this he had no more accidents and did all his poos in the potty and now goes on the actual toilet rather than potty.

I remember the day I posted the post and me thinking if by Christmas we’ve got there it will be a success but literally about 8 days later it was all done! So have faith your LO will get there it just seems they won’t right now!

@Ljordaz140 thanks so much for responding! We started him on Movicol earlier this week as he’d previously been on it. Does your son still take it? We also welcomed a new baby a few months ago so it’s all a bit of a blur as to what went wrong and when!

At this stage if poking a poo with a stick works I’d be willing to give it a go 😂 I’ve also resorted to bribery with Mini Freddo bars so hopefully something will stick. Glad your son managed to get the hang of things so quickly after you posted!
