My ds is 8 months old and started throwing up on friday night, he seems fine between throw ups and is his usual wriggly self but he just can't keep any food down, for the last 2 days he has managed to keep milk down but as soon as he has any solids he does a massive projectile vomit. He has lost quite a bit of weight and I am worried as it seems to be going on for quite a long time now. I have taken him to the doctor twice now as the first doctor was so totally hopeless he told me to give him flat coke to re-hydrate him! I was appalled, he is an 8 month old baby there is no way in this world I am giving him coke. The second doctor which was today just said he has a virus, wait it out. I'm just getting worried as it's nearly 6 days now.

flat coke (or lemonade) is actually fine if you haven't any Dioralyte handy. Also try probiotics ro live yoghurt containing them.

The advice is to stop milk and give some rehydrating solution. I'm surprised you haven't been prescribed any yet. I would have kicked up a fuss, 6 days is a long time and 8m is still tiny. They dehydrate fast at this age.

My DS has had a pukey virus the last few days. I would stop all solids for now. Is he BF or FF? If BF then would just give breast milk little and often so his tummy isn't overwhelmed. If FF then stop giving milk and get some Dioralyte.

Once he is keeping milk down then start on very basic solids like toast, apple puree. No dairy, fats or protein until a couple of days later.

If he starts getting floppy and lethargic, his nappies aren't wet, or his fontanelle is sunken, then he could be dehydrated and might need to go to A&E.

Bottle of water pinch of salt and a teaspoon of salt. I know it dosnt sound to appetising but it does help. My ds was recently very close to dehydration and was told by the doctor to give this soloution to him. Its fine to be given to a child your age.

MegBusset · 16/04/2008 20:26

Do you mean a teaspoon of sugar, Shellylou?

kittypower · 16/04/2008 20:29

sorry should have mentioned I am giving him dioralyte as well, so after he has been sick I am giving him a bottle of dioralyte. I watching very closely for signs of dehydration and as yet he is ok but I am just worried about how long it is going on

my ds had a tummy bug he caught from dd and he had it for 2 weeks i took him to the doctors 3 times and was told i was a nuerotic mother .it did pass but its so worring

MegBusset · 16/04/2008 21:43

When DS had bronchiolitis at 9mo he didn't eat solid food for about three weeks. If he's keeping fluids down then I don't think there's too much cause to worry.

kittypower · 17/04/2008 08:29

He now seems to be keeping milk down but this morning he drank his bottle fine and then I offered him one spoon of porridge and he took it swallowed it and in about 2 seconds so before it has time to get to his tummy he had bought all the milk and the spoon of porridge back up - How long do you think I only offer milk for, it's coming up to a week with no solids now and before he has a massive appetite for food
