How to keep DS safe now he can climb out of his cot

DS age 2.5 can now, as of last night, climb out of his (huge) cot. So today for his nap I put him in his sleeping bag and he still got out- THUD!-hits the floor, shuffles out of the room looking for us. Does this now mean the end of the cot? Is it too dangerous to leave him in it when he could leap out of it in the night and brain himself on the floor/fireplace. Especially with sleeping bag on I imagine he'll fall out head first. Do we have to get a bed now? I worry i won't hear him/wake up and he'll fall out headfirst and I'll find him there in the morning ! Unconscious Do I lock his bedroom door so he can't get out and wander around while we're asleep?

I am afraid peasoup it is probably time for a bed - once they can climb out they will keep doing it which can end up in them having accidents!!!

My dd1 was in her large cot till she was 4. i took the view that if she was big enough to climb out of it she was big enough to do so safely which she did. BUT - no sleeping bag in her case. I think it would be very hard to climb out safely in a bag so in your place I would decide between cot, no bag and bag and bed.

After DS's headfirst plunge, at about 22 months, that resulted in carpet burns all over his forehead, I went out immediately and bought him a toddler bed, low to the ground. I knew I wouldn't be able to sleep, waiting for the 'thud' and fearing that he would have broken his arm or neck.

If I were you, I would now put him on a matterss on the floor until you can get him a bed.

My DS decided to vault out of his cot at the age of 15 months! Way too young to be able to negotiate the stairs so I'm afraid we put him in a bed but with a stair gate on the door of his room... please don't think I'm a bad mother but it seemed a lot safer than having him wander around the house at night. My advice, for what it's worth, is to get him used to a bed with a bed guard, if you chose. Reckon the sleeping bag is a bad idea as it may contribute to an accident rather than prevent it. He's got to get used to staying in bed at some stage.

we went with the bed and stair gate on his door when our ds did this, don't whatever you do lock his door (safety issues)

DS immediately bashed his nose and made it bleed on the bed-guard! We had a v cheap IKEA toddler bed v low to the floor, and his old cot mattress alongside. He often fell out onto the matterss, but it didn't matter.

My ds had no sleeping bag and was happily climbing in and out of his bed from 16 months to 3 when we put him in a bed. He only ever got in and out of it when playing in the day; never at bedtime or early morning. Not sure what I would have done in a sleeping bag as I wanted to keep him in a cot as long as possible due to the size of his room. Also he managed to regularly fell out of bed even with a guard. Also it was 2 wks of hell making him go to bed in a bed and not keep getting out!

When my ds was 3 and a half he used to lie on the floor near the gate in his bedroom and kick the bedroom door back and forward. One morning my husband heard a crash and rushed out to find my ds lieing on the floor under the door which he had swung off the hinges and was tilting over the gate with ds underneath!! DS was fine cant say the same for DH's nerves!!!

I had to admit the cot had to go when ds was trying to tip it over. I took the side off one side so he could easily step out of it (was a big cot bed style though) and if he fell the landing wasn't too far.

Get him a bed.
