Early signs or Autism?

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone with children diagnosed early with autism could help me.

I have twins, male & female, aged 2 years and 2 months.
my DD seems to be hitting all her milestones as expected (some earlier but not much).
my DS on the other hand is not, and I was wondering if any of the below were early indicators for you guys?

  • hand flapping, mainly when excited.
  • sensitive to almost everything and very easy to cry.
  • says no words clearly, but is attempting to say words.
  • late to walk, and coordination still seems poor
  • doesn’t imaginary play
  • won’t lead me to things to show me or ask me to come
  • will hit himself and cry when told no
  • will fixate on the TV if it’s on, so much so we’ve pretty much had to ban it.
  • cannot use a fork/spoon well.

he does maintain eye contact well, and does answer to his name MOST of the time but not always. He certainly ignores me a lot of the time too.

I very much know I shouldn’t compare but the contrast between my DS & DD is so large in development I can’t help but think he may not just be a late bloomer.

I will add - neither nursery nor HV (although awaiting 2 years appt still) have raised any concerns, but sometimes you just get a sense.

thank you x

some of those are signs my son has, and we've been told to expect an autism diagnosis soon (all the professionals agree, it's waiting for the panel to get the piece of paper). I'd be calling the HV and threatening a complaint if they won't refer to paediatrician and speech and language now or at least bring the 2 year check forward, if no luck with them then try the GP. My son was referred when he just turned 2, and he'll be past his 4th birthday when we get the diagnosis, so don't let anyone pull any wait-and-see rubbish; follow your instincts and hold your ground.

I would say there are definitely some red flags there. Not saying any words at all at 2 years 2 months is unusual and definitely indicate a speech delay at the very least. I’m surprised the nursery hasn’t flagged this at all. The sensitivity to things could be a symptom of sensory issues. I would call the hub to get the 2 year review worried along and ask for some referrals.
