Hi guys. FTM here so not really sure what’s normal. My lg is 16m next week. Her understanding is amazing but in terms of words she can say
mama, dada, boo, up, loads of animal noises, drink, bubbles.

Is this ok? A mum in a playgroup said to me that shes surprised shes not talking more and now its thrown me.

i know every child is different but can anyone help or support in what’s normal or to be expected. Thank you xx

I think the mum in playgroup shouldn’t have said anything to be honest. Your little one sounds like she’s doing great with her words.
If she understands what you’re saying and asking and can already say a bunch of words then it honestly sounds like there’s nothing to worry about!

No you’re absolutely right she shouldn’t of. I think thats one of the things that has shocked me the most about being a first time mum is that some mums do not hold back with their comments. Xx

thank you for your reply definitely helped xx

The competitiveness and comparisons are the worst. But the best way I’ve found to tackle it is to think that in X many months, in a group of toddlers the same age, no one will know which of those toddlers said their first word the earliest, or walked first, or whatever else 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think mine was similar at that age. She is now 25 months and has a lot more words but only putting multiple words together occasionally. Another toddler in our NCT group was already putting 2 words together at 18 months. If her understanding is good and she is making progress even if slowly (rather than losing words) I wouldn’t worry at all. Apparently I didn’t have any recognisable words until after 2.5 years.
