10.5m not crawling, referred to physio

Hi all,

I have a 10.5 old who just had a scheduled developmental check. As a baby he was a refluxy, discontented little boy. He was medicated for silent reflux and has only stopped all day crying in the last 4-6 weeks. He has never tolerated any kind of tummy time. He can stand holding on to a surface with a few wobbly solo stands, made some decent attempts at cruising and walks proficiently with held hands. He can rotate around while sitting but has been absolutely steadfast in his refusal to crawl.

He has been referred to a physiotherapist because he is not crawling. The nurse said they want all babies crawling for coordination.

Has anyone experienced anything similar? Or had a baby that skipped crawling altogether?

Many thanks for any insights

My son skipped crawling and is honestly fine. He would roll straight from tummy to back so never attempted even getting into position to crawl.
He walked at 9 months, and it sounds like your son is doing well with his attempts to walk.
It seems extreme to be referred to physio at such a young age when there’s plenty of time for him to develop the skills.
Some babies just don’t crawl.
My son is nearly 1.5 now and when you compare him to other kids his age who are also walking, you would have no idea when each one started or if they crawled / skipped crawling.
Also, he does now crawl. A couple of months ago he just decided to crawl 🤷🏻‍♀️
Any time I spoke to my health visitor they weren’t concerned.

Surprised to be honest, mine crawled at 11 months and is 14 months now and almost walking (I hope, he has started to just let go off furniture and stand in the room for longer periods). He did get in and out of sitting at 9 months and pull up to stand at 10 months. The non-crawling didn’t seem a concern to anyone.

It sounds quite early for a referral tbh unless there are any otger issues noticed in his physicaldevelopment. My son started bottom shuffling at 12mnths and then started walking independently at 20 mnths. I was extremely worried but was told by the health visitor and gp to keep encouraging him.

how sid you get on with physio?
my 11.5 months old isn't crawling. Got our review in 2 weeks, I kind of hope they refer is. She does 360 on the spot but no push to Stand and hardly stands when assisted

Hi there. DS is now 18m, he never did crawl. Briefly bum shuffled but more or less went straight to walking and running. As a result he has some weakness in his legs and is only learning to pull to stand now. We are with a physio but she’s not worried, nor am I. The range of normal is huge.

@blodyn91 I think that crawling has now been removed from the milestones so don't worry about that.

Has the HV asked you to fill in the 12 month Ages & Stages in preparation for the review? Wink

@TinyMouseTheatre @NewMomma21
yep got a questionnaire to fill.
Im not too worried about her lack of gross motor as she scores high in everything else. But if there is something I can do to help strengthen her hips/legs Id like to be able to know what to do sooner rather than later? I have a feelin shes hypermobile (very flexible)

Hi there,

Our physio recommended lots of play on the knees, water mats for interest while kneeling. Making sure he was pulling forward when trying to stand and not pivoting backwards. Playing on the steps of stairs. Swimming to strengthen legs and soft play that requires some manipulation, here in Ireland we have a soft play called Gymboree which is perfect. I’ll be honest DS refuses to do most of these activities! I’m not worried he will get there in his own time. Hope this helps!
