Tell me how you cut your DCs finger nails?

DS (11 mo) goes into a rage whenever I try to cut his nails. It's a nightmare, he screams and wriggles so badly that I'm scared of cutting him.

Any tips?

Try one nail at a time.

Do your own in front of him.

Try sitting on your lap facing the TV whilst you do them.

Bribe with food/Fill mouth with food!

There's a few of our tricks!

Rolypole · 12/04/2008 17:33

all of above plus sneakily doing when she's asleep, or letting her pretend to do it first or on the other hand

chocolatespiders · 12/04/2008 17:33

try and sing to him to get his mind on something else...

my dd1 -10 used to hate hers being done when she was 4 and so we had to do them and put the clippings in a pot to give to someone - it was the only way to do it

i also found clippers better than sissors

sorry also meant to say aswell we used to do them when she was asleep

ratbunny · 12/04/2008 19:31

I do ds's while he is drinking his milk and watching in the night garden.
He hates it normally, snatches his hand away and runs off, but if I do it last thing at night he lets me do it (or at least 1/2 of them!)

chocolateshoes · 12/04/2008 19:34

Found clippers much easier than scissors

windygalestoday · 12/04/2008 19:35

we do 1-2-3 SNIP

Sparkler · 12/04/2008 19:36

Wait until he is asleep and then do it!!!!

ElenorRigby · 12/04/2008 20:00

since I took off a slice of babys thumb when she was like 3 months, I lost my confidence in doing it, so DP does it instead.

PerkinWarbeck · 12/04/2008 20:06

I cut 13mo DD's while DH does his own - makes her feel all grown up, I think!

PuppyDogTails · 12/04/2008 20:09

I did it when he was watching Night Garden and he barely noticed , thanks for the distraction tips!

you see, the night garden is a gift from god! It has many uses. lol.

meep · 12/04/2008 20:12

ElenorRigby - I did that - three times !!!

I use baby nail scissors now - sit dd on my lap facing the tv and can do a hand per day!

Nighbynight · 12/04/2008 20:58

I put them in a cattle crush.

Bluestocking · 12/04/2008 21:02

Once my DS could stand steadily, I used to stand him on the (wide) bedroom window sill and tell him to look out into the garden for cats. This worked really well - I had plenty of light to see what I was doing, he was distracted, plus he knew if he wriggled he would fall off the window sill. (Don't call Social Services!)

Indith · 12/04/2008 21:12

ds is 15 months. Sit on my bd, swing aleg over him to pin him in place, another over his legs if doing his toes. He hates it! Have tries doing it while he is calm and watching tv or something, have tried singing to him. Vice grip is the only way! Toes are terrible, he is so ticklish and one of his toe nails curls inwards so is a devil to cut.

ReallyTired · 12/04/2008 22:26

My son still gets visited by the toe nail fairy at the age of six years old. He will co operate having his nail cut while awake, buts its a family joke that the toe nail fairy leaves toenail clippings and the tooth fairy leaves money.

hester · 12/04/2008 22:29

We really struggled with this at 11 months, but from 18 months it worked really well to go on 'hunts' looking for dinosaurs, tigers, rabbits etc hiding under dd's fingernails. Every now and then something does jump out and hop away, with appropriate sound effects.

CeilingCat · 12/04/2008 22:41

I get them in a holder and use v sharp nail scissors (not baby ones) and do it v quickly. Actually they both quite enjoy it nowadays (youngest is 20 months old).

dreamteamgirl · 12/04/2008 22:47

DS is 3, and I manly strill have to bite his

He has his dad's very wierd nails, that have the skin attached way too high up, so it hurts him quite badly if I get it wrong

bobsi · 13/04/2008 20:07

Another vote for the tv here

Do it when your DS is sleeping, with a tiny pair of scissors.

fishie · 13/04/2008 20:27

those little scissors, every friday so i don't forget. i have done a combination of feeding, bribing, explaining etc.

i am far stricter on nails than teeth.
