What words do you avoid using in front of your LO?

I don't mean swear words, just everyday words that have an effect if used.

Around here I have to be called Mummy or people use endearments if they don't feel comfortable doing that. As soon as Tink hears someone say "Claire" she will say "Claaaaire, Claaaaire" over and over. If she is calling me and I don't respond quick enough she yells "CLAIRE!"

Another word we don't use is "dirty". She has OCD!!! She's 20 months old and for awhile (before Christmas, I can't remember how long exactly) has panicked about dirt. If she drops food she gets upset, she's trying to potty train and if she has an accident she freaks out (which is great cause I give her a real nappy and she just cleans it up, no, I don't mean that...) If I tell her something is dirty she really gets upset so I have to really restrict my use of that word to when I really don't want her to do something. I don't understand it because we are not the tidiest of people, although I do try to keep the place reasonable. Mum is very clean and my BIL is OCD but she's not around Mum or my sister enough to have that rub off on her.

I forgot, if ever I'm not around Tink will say to whoever is looking after her "Where's Claire?" I try to ignore it, afterall there's no one called Claire here, but other's will tell her "No, 'Mummy'".

So come on, what words do you avoid?

I cant say "sorry" in front of my DD or she cries..she associates it with bad things happening, is awkward if I bump into anyone in supermarket etc! (she is 17mos)

SquonkTheBeerGuru · 11/04/2008 14:53

chocolate

cbeebies

bath

swimming

park

(all because if they hear them, they want it NOW!!!!)

HereComeTheGirls · 11/04/2008 14:55

Yes...we have to call milk "white coloured beverage"

egypt · 11/04/2008 14:55

same as squonk!

and we went thru the claire stage. dh still calls me mummy - even in private, mm, makes me feel oh so sexy..

TheArmadillo · 11/04/2008 14:57

Panicking about dirt at that age isn't unusual. I think it's something about controlling their environment, but it's most likely somehting she'll grow out of.

Jelly
Granma
Swimming
park
biscuit

We spell them out. Which leads to people going 'what, what did you say' and lots of confusion.

Tis great

InLoveWithSweenyTodd · 11/04/2008 14:57

pocoyó

InLoveWithSweenyTodd · 11/04/2008 14:58

or else, she'll want to see ALL episodes NOW

SquonkTheBeerGuru · 11/04/2008 15:00

we use an elaborate code system.

Which only the person actually speaking can understand.

What fun!

VictorianSqualor · 11/04/2008 15:01

Nappy.
We have to call nappies 'nanite pants' and they have to be ones that pull-up or DS gets really agitated, because he isn't a baby, his 'number is three'.

WigWamBam · 11/04/2008 15:02

Bananas were aardvarks for a while when dd was obsessed by them.

She twigged soon enough

VictorianSqualor · 11/04/2008 15:10

Lol@aardvarks.
Squonk we have that code too, it make sperfect sense to me but DP has no idea wtf I'm talking about.
Or he works it out and says OUT LOUD the very thing I've told him in code to avoid saying it

SquonkTheBeerGuru · 11/04/2008 16:18

yeah, VS dp does that too!

he says "you meant the chocolate? why didn't you just say so" meanwhile, the kids are jumping up and down saying "chocolate?" "chocolate?"

Servalan · 11/04/2008 16:38

I've become one of those parents who spell things -

G-R-A-P-E-S
Y-O-G-H-U-R-T

SquonkTheBeerGuru · 11/04/2008 16:39

servalan!!! I heart your name

(but you were quite frightening, you know )

SquonkTheBeerGuru · 11/04/2008 16:40

oh, sorry, you said something!

we spell things as well. Tis funny watching dd1 trying to keep up

OverMyDeadBody · 11/04/2008 16:41

I used to spell things too, especially park and ice-cream, but DS has got so used to it now that even if I start spelling I-C-E he knows I mean ice-cream.

Chocolate became mushrooms for a while with other family members, to keep DS in the dark!

Servalan · 11/04/2008 16:42

Ah, those were the days Squonk

I am now exploring the more fluffy and less glamorous sides of my personality!

Swedes · 11/04/2008 16:43

I try and avoid cocksuckingmotherfucker where possible.

SquonkTheBeerGuru · 11/04/2008 16:43

(we're really quite old, aren't we? )

SquonkTheBeerGuru · 11/04/2008 16:44
