What finger food can I give ds2 (8 months) for breakfast?

Apologies in advance as I have to post and run and will be back to read answers at lunchtime ... ds2 is now officially bored of toast and I can't say I blame him! But he cannot manage a spoon himself and will fight me tooth and nail if I try to feed him with one . So it needs to be food he can pick up and eat by himself. Any suggestions gratefully received - I am so crap with food, I have no idea!

Fruit? DD loved pieces of banana at that age.

cmotdibbler · 11/04/2008 09:37

Hot cross buns, scotch pancakes, crumpets, croissants, fruit, sausage, cheese, mini shredded wheats (with or without milk), might be able to pick Cheerios up, or oatcakes.

little bits of hard boiled egg.

Chooster · 11/04/2008 09:47

My DS2 also 8 months, loves bits of pancake and things like rice crispies with just a little milk to soften them up - its a bit of a mess though. Second the fruit idea, DS can easily sit there and eat a whole banana. Sorry, but its good to hear of another baby that dislikes being spoon fed

My son loves eggy bread.

Although I am now looking at cmotdibblers ideas and off to the supermarket.....

Miaou · 11/04/2008 12:55

thanks, some good ideas, particularly the egg, never thought of that! I've been trying to steer away from the high-sugar content processed stuff - I would love to give him porridge, but don't think that's possible! He eats loads of fruit throughout the day so I don't really want to give him more because of the effect on his bottom end

Thank you - any more thoughts welcome!

You can make porridge pancakes - see Aitchs blog for recipes.

Omelette cut into strips works well too.

DS has no line between what he eats, and what we eat, so thats how breakfast goes in this house - esp as I have to eat gluten free. Now he's perfectly capable of feeding himself with a spoon, he does like to sit next to me and feed me with cereal.

Bing! Great idea cmot - will investigate

DS eats porridge with hands, just shoves it in, it is very messy, so if you can't be bothered with the pancakes, give it a go. Also he's started having cheerios now. Throw the crisp ones on the floor, and eats the soggy ones, again by palming them in.

Shreddies, mini weetabix with a little bit of milk so not too dry. (Well I think they are nice with a bit of milk - DD doesn't care).

jojosmaman · 11/04/2008 13:52

raisin mini oatibix or mini weetabix are what my ds (14mths) has. SOmetimes he has shreddies but he prefers the other two. Perfect size for little fingers

Pesha · 11/04/2008 13:59

My ds2 also has bitesize shredded wheat or mini weetabix with just enough milk to soften them but not so much he can pour it all over himself and the floor!

Tescos do their own bitesize shredded wheat with cranberry or apricot or pomegranate and something in the middle that ds2 loves!

He's also very keen on hot cross buns.

My DD has always liked dipping her toast (or anything bready) into her redy brek. Sounds gross but works really well, softens the toast right up and gets quite a lot of porridge into her!

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 11/04/2008 21:10

Mix cereal with yoghurt instead of milk and they can pick it up in clumps!

Also - porridge made slightly thicker and they can shovel it in with their hands.

Eggy bread

Fruit scones

Bits of cheese
