DS falls asleep in his dinner, is this normal?

DS2 is 3y8m. In the past few months I have noticed that he gets very tired by evening time.

He quite often (3-4 times a month) falls asleep at the dinner table - meaning a bedtime of 5.30pm.

I just assume he's knackered from a busy day - he doesn't have a daytime sleep.

I hadn't given it a thought but I had a friend over this afternoon with a DD the same age and she was absolutely gobsmacked that this happens.

Whadya reckon?

Maybe give him something earlier to eat and if he is still awake at dinner time, offer him more, else just put him in bed.

just to point out that in South Africa, Dinner = Supper not lunch

Very confusing...

No my dd1 (same age as your ds) is shattered by 5pm, they have their dinner at 4.30pm, both the dd's have baths 5-5.30 dd2 in bed at 6 and dd1 in bed by 6.30 the latest (more often than not she asks to go to bed around 6ish) she used to be an early riser (6am ish) but lately has been sleeping to 7-7.30am

If this is nor normal behaviour it's probably worth having a chat to your GP. Has he been ill or been more active then usual during the day?

I took him to the Paediatrician and he had a full medical a few weeks ago.

The paed declared him fit as a fiddle.

Ds starts to eat his dinner from 4:30 onwards, he is a bit of a grazer so he has something decent to eat while he is awake, then bath at 5:30 and then he has a yogurt when we have dinner if he is still awake. I understood dinner being supper.

Maybee he's been partying hard in the day?? Is he getting up early?

dejags · 09/04/2008 20:30

He gets up around 6.30/7, so not too ridiculously early.

He had friends round today. They ran around like crazy - DH is not remotely concerned. He thinks it's terribly sweet, that DS is so tired and happy at the end of his day and loves to sleep. I did/do too.

6:30's early. So is anything before 10am . I wish! If he's a tad on the energetic side during the day this will make him tired. He may be going through a growth spurt and is using all his energy on growing.

DS1 sometimes does this too, but he's a bit younger than yours (2.4). However, my niece, now 7, used to do it too, probably up to the age of 5 or 6, so I haven't been worried by DS1! Sounds like he's just had a busy day and once he sits down he's shattered (I know the feeling!).

Normal my dd1 4.2yrs does this or eats a snail pace.

My sister used to do this when she was a child upto about 10yrs when she had been busy allday. and depending on how annoying she had been that day would depend whether my brother or me would move her plate before her head hit it .
