Worried about baby's vision

My 4 1/2 week old doesn't seem to look at or focus on anything. I've literally never seen her look at a face, a toy, contrast card, breast or bottle. Everything I read says that they should have been interested in faces from birth, should even be starting to track your face if moved side to side by now. I see videos of babies this age clearly looking at contrast cards, peering at their parents, etc. Mine just seems to stare blankly up or off to the side, not down or straight ahead. She also doesn't make any cooing noises, nothing other than newborn grunts. I've convinced myself that she is either blind or autistic (or both) and I just feel so anxious & sick about it all of the time. I keep googling baby milestones & bursting into tears. What did your babies do at this age?

I'm sorry that you're worried like this.

Personally I don't think it really matters what stage other babies are at.

Instead I'd call your HV and ask for an appointment. If she's not able to give you one then call the GP in the morning to get an appointment with a Doctor.

I'd fill in the One month Ages & Stages and the Two months Social & Emotional Ages & Stages and ask the HV to mark them for you.

Do not be fobbed with them saying that you can't have an appointment yet please. Insist that you think that your baby can't see and needs an appointment urgently.

Do you have a 6 week check with the GP coming up? If baby still doesn't seem to look at things, that would be a good place to raise it.

The questionnaires linked to above are very good, but be aware that your baby is at the very youngest end of the range they are for. They are 2 month questionnaires with the age range notionally 1-3 months, but that's an absolutely huge amount of time at this stage. Please try not to worry too much about the scores at this stage, and potentially look at them again when baby is nearer 2 months.
