Baby cough

Hi all,

I'm looking for ideas...

My 18 month old has had an ongoing cough since November. We've done all sorts to help, including...

  • a gp app every-time it gets worse
  • two different types of antibiotics on numerous occasions
  • blue and brown inhaler
  • humidifier and dehumidifier
  • chest x rays
  • change of bedroom
  • antihistamine

We may have a good week or so, but then it's back and it's really getting myself, husband and girly (most importantly) down. I don't feel like I'm doing anything to help and the gp just says.. 'keep going with the inhaler' and nothing is working!

Anybody having or had similar experiences?
FTM here, so any advice is helpful!

Does the antihistamine help at all?

It's hard to say to be honest.

For example, I must have been up 3/4 before midnight last night because she was getting upset. So decided to give allerief, she settled after 30 mins. So I don't know whether it was that, or an extra puff on the blue inhaler?

I do believe that it's asthma, as her dad has asthma, but I am a total novice!

My DSis had Asthma very young too. One thing that helped her was following the advice for House Dust Mite Allergy.

Have you spoken to Asthma & Lung UK to see if they have any advice?

No I haven't actually!

I think I'm reluctant to because she hasn't been diagnosed with asthma as they don't diagnose so young.

I'm concerned because I feel like I'm missing something! Is it a food allergy?! Is it hayfever? Is it an allergy to our dog (poodle for reference)? I'm constantly thinking what can it be... then I hear her cough and that's it, absolutely triggered for the night.

I will call the gp tomorrow dn see what advice I can get, I'm just hoping it ends at some point!

My DSis is definitely better after we started doing the things to elimate House Dust Mites and Asthma & Lung can be useful. It might be worth talking to them before speaking to the GP.

It could be an infection though? A DF's DC had an horrendous cough for a long time and after many visits to the Hospital and GP they eventually decided to test for bacteria, gave her the appropriate antibiotics and the long term cough vanished.
